Another comeback

MARVELOUS” Marvin Sonsona makes yet another ring comeback following another long layoff.

Following an absence from the ring for more than a year, Sonsona, once dubbed as Philippine boxing’s next star, is back in action against Tanzanian Allan Kamote in one of the main fights in SGG Promotions boxing event on July 21 at the Araneta Coliseum.

“This fight is very crucial for him and his performance is our gauge on what will be next for him,” said SGG Promotions head Sammy Gello-ani. “His opponent is not an easy one and he has to continue working hard in the gym for this fight.”

The 22-year-old former World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion’s boxing career has been on and off since losing to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in 2010.

After getting knocked out by Vazquez Jr. in the fourth round, Sonsona was never the same.

“Definitely yes, I’m just waiting for him to become mature and reprogram his boxing career. He will be 23 years old on July. So I’m hoping that changes in his life have been reached and it will motivate him to focus in his career,” Gello-ani said.

Following a 20-month layoff Sonsona made his ring return in 2011 and scored a unanimous decision over Carlos Jacobo. He scored a fifth-round knockout in his next fight last year against Carlos Fulgencio.

Sonsona was supposed to fight in the US after that, against Orlando Cruz, but the Gen. Santos City native suffered an injury that once again sidelined him.

Sonsona has an impressive slate of 16-1-1 with 13 knockouts, while Kamote is 20-6-4 with 12 knockouts. Kamote has fought the likes of former world title challenger Napapol Sor Ringvusai and Pan Asian Boxing Association bantamweight titleholder Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat.

The blockbuster event is headlined by International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero, who is having his third title defense.

Gello-ani is still waiting for the confirmation of Casimero’s challenger.

In the undercard, unbeaten WBO Youth flyweight king Froilan Saludar (16-0-1, 11 KOs) defends his title against 19-year-old Tanzanian prospect Fadhili Majiha (13-3-4, 6 KOs); while former amateur standout Adones Cabalquinto (14-0, 8 KOs) faces one of his stiffest tests as he challenges WBO Asia-Pacific light welterweight titlist Jay Solmiano (17-2-1, 13 KOs).

-------------------------------------------------

Hopefully this fight goes through :D

this kid needs to be motivated. tamad magpraktis. kala nya kaya lahat na kalaban. if he will show up in the fight with that baby fats again, we cannot expect to see a KO from him. worse baka sya pa ma KO. when he is in gensan, palagi laman ng mga bars. may nagsabi ayaw pasaway sa magulang. at mdyo mataba na. i was not surprised he was KO by a bum in vasquez. SAYANG ka BAI...wake- up.(thats for MARVIN)
