PBA is dying, but UAAP basketball is here to stay.
Football featuring Azcals is surging. The commercials
of the top football players are giving the sport the
necessary exposure which I cannot say to the spoiled PBA
pros. I don't watch PBA anymore, but I go for college basketball
in UAAP.

I don't believe Basketball is dying.. I love both sports, just support each other..
Like Barcelona Football Club, they created a basketball team with the same owners, fan base and color of uniform..( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpbIrhePirw )
I have an idea, how about a team in PBA create a team in Football to make a commercialized professional football league for filipinos.. Like San Miguel Beer United,.... or Ginebra FC... just a thought.. 8)

It will not be the death of basketball (maybe the PBA) but it will slow down the interest of youngsters...in sports its just like in business..their are ups and downs....and also for those who are criticizing the azkals...the teams core group is just under 25 years old which means they still have more than 5 years of prime carrers plus the under 23 team is already being develop to continue the sports momentum...the Azkals may loss to Kuwait but the team has still alot of competition ahead aside from the WC qualifiers...2012 has 2 major tournament the Suzuki cup and the challenge cup so the Azkals will stay for a little while ......and the for the PBA, they should have another strategy to reaquire the pinoys trust in the league..

football can only be played by students wherin their schools have these fields.
indoor football if advertize still needs new spaces, and cant be available in ordinary barangays, a halfcourt for football is worthless.

Baka maunahan sila ng Philippine Vocanoes.

Rugby doesn't have worldwide popularity unlike football.

I think Pinoys are slowly losing interest in basketball. PBA's popularity is gradually eroding. With the upcoming lockout in the NBA, basketball's demise is accelerated. Of course, basketball will still be a hit in the barangays, but that's it. Pro leagues here suck nowadays. Same with college basketball.

Dude, you just don't know how some women around Manila are now ready to trash the good-looking Azkals in favor of these NEW dudes.
The truth is, these women only really loved the looks of the players, not the game itself. They don't care about worldwide popularity of the game. Ask Radeon.
That also confirms why football made a sudden turn around from being unpopular for years into a nationwide success.

I agree with you that the good looks of the Azkals are what attracted the female fans to become rabid football fans. But I think they've also slowly come to love the game itself. It helps that there are handsome mestizos that sustain the interest of female fans (No homo). Add to that showbiz chismis about Angel Locsin and Phil Younghusband.

It would be good for both football and rugby to become popular in the country. If you eat meat (like basketball) all the time, nakakasawa rin. So you need vegetables such as football and rugby, for variety.

Having a commercial name for a football team goes against football culture. It's always the name of the city or place where the football club was established. For example, Manila Imperialists FC or Cebu Bisdaks FC. Companies can sponsor the club and have their brands printed on the football jerseys.

Nagretire na ako sa basketball, tennis na nilalaro ko.
I lost interest in basketball when Philippine team composed of
PBA players were losing in Asian games. Sabi ko, basketball is not really
for Pinoys. But I still watch UAAP because of the college team rivalries.

We need a football league in the Philippines to sustain fans' interests.
We can start small. Probably a league of 5 teams to be formed by the
corporations which have extra funds for sports development and at the
same time promote their products and services. They can also import
some foreign players to inject quality and competitiveness of the games.
With the resurging popularity of the sport, I believe football will attract
sponsors and more fans to follow the sport. This will also inspire young
kids to take up football.

This Azkals phenomenon is great for the sport, like the 80's to 90's era of PBA.
Admit it or not, football is more suited for Pinoys than basketball.

Hey numbnuts, I'm not saying that Bball in PH is a fad. U stupid or something? Have u heard of MIKAA, numbnuts? MIKAA was the semi-pro Bball in the PH then in 1978 pba was established. U call that a fad? I guess u can count on how many years pba was watched in every household in th PH. now, that's a loooooooooooooooooong @ss reign for a fad.

basketball in general is not dying but the PBA in particular is not as relevant before.

I never missed a single PBA game on TV when i was in grade/highschool.
Now I don't really have the interest in watching or rooting for a certain team anymore.

for me the PBA today lacks the excitement of team rivalries that we had before, players gets traded to often, teams tend to rely more on their imports abilities. even the imports are not that exciting anymore,
where's tonny harris? alexander coles? lamont strothers? norman black? bobby parks? hamilton? sean chambers?

Now we are on the infancy stage of getting to know and love football.
I hope the soccer fever does not die down easily and a pro league gets formed to sustain it. We need to have our filipino beckham, ronaldo, rooney
para di mawala sa mainstream ung interest ng fans. baka kasi pag nawala na sila phil and james, laos na ang football.
We really have a big chance excelling on this sport. 8)

PBA's shelf life has expired. It's not as popular like Crispa-Toyota days.

We already have a local football league in UFL.
See link below.VVV
http://www.footballalliance.com.ph/

Although the league may have gotten ample support from the sponsors, only plenty people come to see the games live.
And mostly, these are the football fans & relatives in general. Even if some of the Azkals play for this league, fan support is still not enough.

Are Pinoy Football fans bandwagoners? Maybe. For the football to go miles, they need to reach the masses. But how can they reach the masses
when a ticket to watch the Azkals' game live is more than P2,000. It's like watching a concert of a foreign performer. :?

Manuod na lang ako ng Varekai.

the superuberexaggerated hype over a team that way will never kill basketball in the Philippines.you know why?football needs so many things to play it over some extra time.and i mean kids in the country will ever have a chance to play it competitively by having futbol as their past-time. futbol craze may take some time off kids for taekwondo practices or ballet for girls but never basketball which is readily playable anywhere.
