Beginning with the Cotto fight, Manny Pacquiao has fought very difficult matches with heavier, taller and stronger opponents. He was subjected to a lot of heavy blows by Cotto, Clottey, Margarito and Marquez (Marquez came in during fight night heavier and stronger being taller than Manny). The accumulation of these heavy blows have a telling effect on him, affecting his ability both physically and psychologically. One can say that he has become a diminished fighter when measured against his peak form. In fact his last two fights involving Mosley and Marquez revealed a reduced killer instinct, intensity and mobility. His usual hunger for victory is also under question. Success and riches have a way of derailing a boxer’s focus.

Now he will face Tim Bradley, an undefeated slick Black American who is notorious in the dirty tricks department and whose style of pressure and relentless attack may prove to be too much for the “ageing” Pacquiao to handle. Bradley is equally fast and quick although he is an average puncher. He claims he has studied Pacquiao for the last three months and he sees flaws in Manny’s arsenal which he plans to exploit.

Bradley’s truly a live opponent and Manny is well-advised to be serious and not underestimate him or he will taste defeat without having fought Mayweather Jr. Outside of Floyd, Bradley is the most dangerous fight out there for Manny. Why has Bob Arum favored so much this match? Has Arum felt Manny has tanked out and he sees fit to feed Manny to his new, prospective cash cow in the person of Tim Bradley. Arum has worked hard in seeing to it that Pacquiao-Mayweather will not happen on May 5. He simply does not like Floyd to make a lot of money out of his cash cow. He wants to keep it in-house! What we are seeing now is the intricate ways Arum juggles and matches his marquee fighters to shore up his business interests amidst chaos and confusion in contemporary boxing scene.

How Manny handle this new challenge will greatly help him in defining his legacy. A victory over Bradley may be enough even if Pacquiao-Mayweather will not materialize.
