Boholano ring sensation, Rey “BoomBoom” Bautista will defend his World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific bantamweight title against a tough South African boxer on January 8, 2005 at the Mandaue sports complex in Mandaue City, Cebu.

The 18-year old native of Candijay was earlier slated to bang against Australian Matt Powell but the Pan-European champion backed out after suffering back injury.

Bautista who is touted as the next Manny Pacquiao of the Philippine boxing is rigidly training under the Antonio L. Aldeguer gym with former world champion Edito “ALA” Villamor, will go against Zolani Mbelekani whose ring record of 13 wins, 8 loses and 2 draws with six knock-outs impressed international boxing promoter Sammy “Don King” Gello-ani.

The rising star of Philippine boxing whose complete demolition of Indonesian fighter, Christian Kasino at the Bohol Wisdom Schoolgym last October 24 definitely impressed his kababayans.

Bautista who is still undefeated in all of his 12 professional fights with nine knock-outs will be tested again as a new year opening salvo of Philippine boxing.

ferocious that's how i will describe rey "boom-boom" bautista. i saw him faught here in mandaue city and man, i tell you, his Thai opponent received no less than mike-tyson-type of beating. his punch is so powerful that can send a manny pacquiao staright to the canvas without bothering to get up.

Ponce De Leon's punch was so powerful that it sent Boom Bum straight to the canvas and got up wobbly.
