Word war erupts over gloves

INTERNATIONAL promoter Murad Muhammad yesterday vehemently denied that he had "sold out" when he signed a contract that allowed the use of Winning gloves, Erik Morales' preferred brand, for the March 19 showdown with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

Murad was reacting to charges that he had signed for the use of the thicker Japan-made gloves to the disadvantage of Pacquiao, who has been using the thinner Cleto Reyes brand since he started fighting in the United States in 2001.

On Saturday, Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said Murad agreed to the use of Winning, which would give Morales the edge, "without consulting anybody."

Murad, however, exploded when informed of the charges, carried on the Internet, that he had sold Pacquiao cheap.

Upon learning that the Internet story was written by Winchell Campos, a Team Pacquiao insider, Murad went livid.

"Murad claimed that Campos was someone who left his country and traded the Philippines for the US," Ronnie Nathanielsz wrote in a dispatch to the Manila Standard yesterday.

"Murad said Campos is now sowing dissension within the Pacquiao camp, just days before the crucial, defining fight of Pacquiao's career."

Explained Murad: "Do you for a moment think that I would do this to Pacquiao, a fighter whom we have built to become the greatest little man who ever came to the shores of North America? This is ludicrous. I would never allow my fighter to be disadvantaged."

Murad added Morales "will never beat us no matter what gloves they wear because Manny is going to win that fight."

"The gloves are incidental," he said. "My goal was to get Erik Morales and Manny will win whether he uses Everlast, Winning, Reyes or any other gloves."

Campos, formerly with the Manila Times, who has fed Manila with vital details on Pacquiao's training here, has reportedly moved into the Pacquiao apartment.

He had actually tried to keep the gloves issue from the media, apparently to maintain peace in the Pacquiao camp.

Roach said the Reyes gloves are "a puncher's gloves and power registers," while the Winning gloves are "softer and thicker" and should suit the needs of Morales, who "must have bad hands and wants more padding on the gloves."

Murad was expected in Las Vegas Monday to receive Team Pacquiao.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao himself has reportedly revealed he had spent almost P2 million on airline tickets, hotel accommodation and ringside tickets for guests he had invited.

First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo is expected to arrive in Las Vegas two days before the fight, while a host of other personalities from Manila are also expected at ringside on March 19.

Why giving enormous emphasis on gloves? A little thing like this means a lot right now, we knew that, but I thought the same way as Murad, that making a dispute over this gloves issue could trigger a prelude to postpone the fight. Erik has bad hand right now and the fight MUST go on this Saturday. Get my point???

As for Freddie Roach, I still think that he’s getting more and more vocal to pursue his own personal agenda against Murad. That’s about it.

I believe that with or even without any of the gloves, Manny is going to dismantle Morales on March 19. Period.

Murad problaby put a bet on Morales, we all knew that Morales have a granite chin and Manny cannot win by points in Las Vegas, everything in Vegas is run by the "climate" in sportsbooks.

In fairness to Murad, i think he was just acting like the businessman he is. He wants the Erik fight at all cost and maybe the only way to get that is by using the gloves preferred by Erik.. The problem is as a promoter you also should be aware of your team and you can make decisions as a promoter but when it concerns the rest of the team you have to run it by them. Or at least inform them way before hand. He may not think it matters but he doesn't step in the ring so he doesnt know.

I also think that he could have negotiated that and not just be a Yes man. From what I learned, Erik vs. MAB fought w/ the Cleto Reyes gloves in either I or II and Erik didn't want Joe Cortez as the referee because he's a buddy of Barrera's manager.

But what's done is done and we're close to fight time now so all we can do now is roll with the punches as they say.

First, let me the first one to defend Winchell.
Winchell is a sincere Pacman loyalist.
Winchell actually knows a ton more of what Pacman's thoughts and feelings are than MM.
Was it an oversight that the glove provision was not read by MM?
Most likely, yes.
Does MM know boxing that well?
I guess not.
The official gloves used in California and Vegas is the Reyes brand. Other fighters opt for Everlast and Grant. Winning gloves are only worn by EM and PBF. Tyson has always fought with Everlast gloves in Vegas. So did Larry Holmes, Ali and Foreman.
EVERYONE in the boxing knew Morales had brittle hands.
How did MM not know that?
Well, he just doesn't follow boxing that well I guess.

Although murad is right when he said Manny will regardless of whatever gloves he will use in the fight, but the point is he made crucial decisions without first consulting the rest of the team.

Does a promoter have that kind of previledge? Will I think Murad does!
