Broussard: Nets Try For Big Three! Seek Deal with Magic for Howard; Would Trade Lopez, Hump, Brooks
by Net Income on Jul 3, 2012 6:57 AM EDT in 2012 Free Agency

Take a deep breath! Don't exhale just yet!

Chris Broussard reports Tuesday morning that the Nets and Magic are in talks to trade Dwight Howard to Brooklyn, which would give the Nets a Big Three of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Howard.

"Sources: The Nets & Magic are discussing a trade that would send Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, Marshon Brooks... and the Nets' first-round picks in 2013, 2015 and 2017 ....move would give Nets Big 3 of D-Will, Dwight & Joe Johnson." Later, Broussard and Ken Berger reported other teams are still in the mix, but as Broussard noted, Nets offer is "not bad." He added that Deron Williams has told the Nets he's willing to sign for less if necessary.

Chris Mannix confirmed the story, writing that the Nets might be able to take on Hedo Turkoglu. "In a potential deal with Orlando, source says Nets would be willing to take back Hedo Turkoglu...Those asking how Nets can afford this: Can exceed the cap to re-sign Lopez and Humphries (Bird rights) and then flip them for Dwight/Hedo." Lopez and Humphries would have to approve the terms of a sign-and-trade. Howard and Humphries share an agent, Dan Fegan.

Fred Kerber also reports the two sides are talking after a rebuff Sunday. "Nets made 2 separate offers Sunday were rejected by Magic who then heard nothing else to match Brooklyn proposal. so they talking again."

Overnight, Peter Vecsey tweeted that new Orlando GM Rob Hennigan had called Billy King to try and renew talks after he had declined to deal with the Nets earlier in the day. "Told Nets today he would not deal with them. Now asking, say sources, if something can be done?"

Next up for Brooklyn Nets: Mirza Teletovic, Bosnian forward, top Euroleague scorer … Dwight Howard blocker?

Two days after reportedly agreeing to a four-year deal with All-Star forward Gerald Wallace and one day after trading to secure the services of All-Star wing Joe Johnson, the Brooklyn Nets found some time in their busy schedule of working to land All-Star center Dwight Howard and trying to bring back All-Star point guard Deron Williams to bring aboard a player whose resume boasts a shocking zero NBA All-Star Games. To be fair to Mirza Teletovic, though, he has yet to actually play in an NBA game, and they generally don't just put non-NBA players in the midseason exhibition.

Howard Beck of The New York Times reported via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that the Nets and Teletovic have agreed in principle on a contract that will bring the 6-foot-9-inch Bosnian power forward to Brooklyn this coming season. After reportedly drawing interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns following a strong season in Spain (and the completion of a €2.2 million buyout with his European team), Teletovic has agreed to a three-year deal worth just under $15.7 million, meaning the Nets will use their full mid-level exception on the 26-year-old big man.

Teletovic averaged 16.3 points (on 46.3 percent field-goal shooting and a 36 percent mark from 3-point range) and 6.9 rebounds in 31.1 minutes per game last season for Caja Laboral of Spain's Liga ACB, the country's top league, where the likes of the Gasols, Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderon, Rudy Fernandez and others played before coming to the NBA. He was also the leading scorer in the 2011-12 Euroleague regular season, averaging 21.7 points and six rebounds over 10 games, and hitting 43.1 percent of his long-distance tries.

Most scouting reports suggest that he profiles as a stretch four in the NBA, an accurate shooter who prefers to play on the perimeter on offense and doesn't offer a ton on the other end, especially on the defensive glass. Writing at Nets blog Nets are Scorching, Sam Meyerkopf of Euroleague Adventures suggested reasonable NBA comparisons for Teletovic's game might include Ryan Anderson on the high side and Channing Frye on the low end:

On paper, as that report suggests, bringing in a sweet-shooting pick-and-pop big to run with a re-signed Williams (who made beautiful music with Carlos Boozer in a similar arrangement in Utah way back when) and incoming star Johnson (no slouch at orchestrating in the screen game himself) makes an awful lot of sense for a Brooklyn team that's still figuring out what its offensive identity is going to be.

Having the option of using Teletovic to attack defenses with the two-man game certainly provides more offensive variety than a returning Kris Humphries or any other four on Brooklyn's radar, making the burgeoning new-look Nets an interesting offensive team ... and maybe even more than that, if those increasingly loud rumblings reported by multiple outlets Tuesday morning could actually result in Brooklyn landing Howard. Remember, "spread the floor with shooters, let Dwight draw attention and make opponents pay for doubling" was a pretty effective strategy for a few years there in Orlando, and with all due respect to Jameer Nelson and company, that was without any complimentary talent on the order of Williams and Johnson on the roster.

Unfortunately, on paper — read: on the balance sheet — Teletovic could also severely hamper the Nets' chances of building a title contender.

The signing of Teletovic — and, more specifically, the fact that the Nets are using their full mid-level exception to do it — seems to make the already thin financial margins within which a Nets-Magic trade would work just about disappear, especially if Orlando insists on Brooklyn providing additional cap relief by taking back the contracts of Hedo Turkoglu (owed $11.8 million for 2012-13) or Jason Richardson (due $18.6 million over the next three years) in the bargain.

So how about it, Deron and Crash? Ready to get on that LeBron/Wade/Bosh belt-tightening plan (only more so) to make sure the Nets can fit one more star attraction under the big tent at the Barclays Center? If not, the odds of seeing Dwight Howard in Brooklyn might have just become infinitesimal.

Nets land Reggie Evans in sign-and-trade deal
2 hours 25 minutes ago

The Brooklyn Nets have reached agreement on a three-year, $5 million contract with free-agent forward Reggie Evans, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Evans will join the Nets in a sign-and-trade deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers will receive a future second-round draft pick while the Nets use a $3 million trade exception to acquire Evans.

Evans averaged 1.9 points and 4.8 rebounds in 13.8 minutes over 56 games for the Clippers last season.

Sources: Deron Williams picks Nets

Updated: July 3, 2012, 7:22 PM ET
By Mike Mazzeo | Special to ESPNNewYork.com

Just after 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, the All-Star point guard tweeted, "Made a very difficult decision today ..." along with a link to a photo of the Nets' logo.

Williams' decision to stay was confirmed by ESPN.com. His contract will be worth the five-year, $100 million max, a source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Williams chose the Nets over his hometown Dallas Mavericks, who could only offer four years, $75 million based on the rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the Mavericks were notified of Williams' decision by agent Jeff Schwartz on Tuesday night. Club officials declined comment.

Nets could still get Dwight Howard

Updated: July 3, 2012, 4:09 PM ET
By Chris Broussard | ESPN The Magazine

The Nets and the Magic are discussing a trade that would send Howard to Brooklyn for Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and the Nets' first-round draft picks in 2013, 2015 and 2017, sources said. Lopez and Humphries, who are both free agents, would go to Orlando in sign-and-trade deals.

No trade is imminent, and the Nets are looking for a third team to help facilitate a potential trade for Howard.

The Magic are also considering trade possibilities with the Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets, sources say.

The Nets are trying to pull off their second blockbuster trade this week and give themselves a big three of Howard, Deron Williams and Joe Johnson that could rival the NBA champion Miami Heat's heralded trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

In fact, the Nets would actually have a big four as they move into their first season in Brooklyn. Sources said that forward Gerald Wallace has agreed to a four-year, $40 million deal to stay with the Nets.

On Monday, the Nets agreed to terms with the Hawks on a trade that sends Johnson to Brooklyn for the expiring contracts of Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Anthony Morrow and Jordan Williams, plus DeShawn Stevenson and the 2013 first-round pick they acquired from Houston.

The Nets are still waiting on Deron Williams to tell them whether he will re-sign with them as a free agent, but sources say Williams was pleased with the trade for Johnson, so he is expected to stay. An additional trade for Howard would undoubtedly seal the deal.

If consummated, a trade to Brooklyn would give Howard what he has wanted for the past seven months. In December, Howard asked the Magic to trade him to the Nets.

After waiving his opt-out clause for next season in March, he again asked Orlando several times to trade him to the Nets, most recently Friday in his first face-to-face meeting with new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan.

On Monday, Howard told Yahoo! Sports that he would sign a long-term contract only with the Nets, but after the Nets' trade with Atlanta for Johnson, the chances of Howard going to Brooklyn appeared dead.

In fact, several executives involved in the talks privately said there was no chance of Howard being traded to the Nets.

But the two clubs eventually rekindled talks about a potential Howard move.

As for other teams, the Lakers could offer Andrew Bynum, the Hawks could give Al Horford and Jeff Teague, and the Rockets have been assembling draft picks and assets to entice the Magic.

The Dallas Mavericks, who could sign Howard as a free agent next summer, have also emerged as a potential team for Howard.

core 3 of DERON, JOE and D12? a potential #8 seed.
