FIBA World Cup qualifiers: Gilas survives scrappy Japan

After starting hot, Gilas Pilipinas nearly got burned by a determined opponent.

The visitors' big man, small man combination made sure their first game in these FIBA World Cup qualifiers didn't go up in smoke.
Jayson Castro scored 20 points and Andray Blatche added 13, including timely 3-pointers by them in the second half, as Gilas Pilipinas downed Japan 77-71 in Tokyo on Friday.

Gilas Beats Chinese Taipei, 90-83
Nov.27,2017
Araneta Coliseum

After a scary & erratic start, Gilas found themselves behind by as much as 14 pts.in the 1st quarter,
The Chinese exchanged shots for shots against the Filipinos who failed to make their outside shots.
Gilas was able to quite pull away by 10 pts. only in the 4th & last quarter of the game.
I didn't see any excellent play by Gilas & only the heroics of Castro & the inside play of
Fajardo saved the day for our Gilas. At last JuneMar showed why he's the 4 time PBA's MVP.
I hate to say this, but if Gilas continues to play like this, the Aussies will butcher them.
But as a Filipino, i hope that we win our next games & earn a berth in the FIBA World Cup. :D

Congratz GILAS PILIPINAS... 8) :celebrate:

Breakout game for JuneMar Fajardo...  :toast:
Sana ganun palagi ang mindset ni abai, kailangan mataas ang kumpyansa sa sarili at palaging mangalabaw/mangararo sa ilalim... :box: :) :D

Di siya kayang pigilan sa ilalim ni Quincy Davis kagabi at kahit ninuman from the Taiwan squad...

Tsaka yung mga 3-point shots ni Wright during the 4th quarter ang talagang dumiin sa mga kalaban... 8) :) :celebrate:

My take: On February Gilas lineup against Aussie

Terrence Romeo over Kevin Alas (if Romeo is healthy)
Raymond Almazan over Troy Rosario (if Almazan is healthy)

Next game sa February 22 against Aussies... Matinding kalaban ang Australia, sigurado mahihirapan ang GILAS. Nevertheless, Laban lang... GO GILAS... :) :D :D

Wala pang NBA players sa Australian lineup yan. Malakas talaga. We really need our shooters to show up. Laban lang.

The current Gilas roster is no different from the Gilas of the past. Chot Reyes made no adjustment. We had very little success competing in FIBA tournaments coz we lack in height. And what does this current Gilas has in common with the Gilas of the past. They both lack in height. Instead of loading up on big men Chot Reyes prefer to have 3 extra point guards aside from Castro only to bench them for he lives and dies with Castro. If Gilas play a ten game series with the Aussies, Gilas would be 1 for 10.

Gilas would lose by no less than 15 points against the Aussies.
