Kawhi Leonard Rumors: Lakers Landing Spurs Star Would 'Clinch' LeBron James

TYLER CONWAY
JUNE 27, 2018

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly upped their aggression in trade talks for Kawhi Leonard because acquiring the two-time Defensive Player of the Year would "likely clinch" signing LeBron James as a free agent.

Ramona Shelburne, Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported the latest intel on negotiations Wednesday, which have ramped up over the last 24 hours. The Lakers are under pressure to get a deal done quickly because LeBron has until 11:59 p.m. ET Friday to decide whether to decline his player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers to become an unrestricted free agent.

James' timetable has sped everything up because he's also reportedly wanting his free-agency decision to happen by early July. In 2010 and 2014, LeBron kept the entire NBA waiting for more than a week before making his announcements.

Acquiring Leonard has become increasingly imperative as Paul George has warmed to the idea of staying in Oklahoma City. George has been borderline Sharpie'd into the Lakers' plans for more than a year at this point—a notion the All-Star swingman has done little to refute. However, the Thunder made a strong pitch to George during the 2017-18 season and seemed to be coalescing before Andre Roberson went down.

It would be hard to see James leaving Cleveland for Los Angeles without another star secured. The Lakers can offer San Antonio a package that includes Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram and picks. It's unclear if that will be enough—or even if the Lakers are willing to sink that deep into their young-player war chest.

A core of James and Leonard alone isn't going to be enough to beat the Golden State Warriors. It's a good start, but James would be facing a similar uphill battle to the one he has in Cleveland. The Lakers are going to have to round out their roster in rapid-fire quickness with capable role players, provided George does not come along.

If the Lakers can make the LeBron-Kawhi-George fever dream happen, though? Then things could get mighty interesting.

Lack of second star makes LeBron James ‘hesitant’ to play for Lakers

 Rexwell Villas
Rumors surrounding LeBron James and how his next chapter in the NBA has gradually intensified of late, and it’s about to hit the crescendo very soon with only two days left before the free-agent market opens.

If James declines to pick up his option with the Cleveland Cavaliers which is worth $35.6 million before July 1, he’s going to be an unrestricted free agent, reportedly with an eye on the possibility of joining the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the current makeup of the Lakers’ roster does not inspire James.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Brian Windhorst, and Ramona Shelburne, there is reluctance on James’ part to join the Lakers primarily because Los Angeles has yet to add another star to its roster so far this offseason.

As LeBron James remains hesitant to be the first superstar to decide on the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, pressure is mounting for the Lakers front office to execute a trade with the  San Antonio Spurs to acquire disgruntled All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, league sources told ESPN.

James wants to play more off the ball beginning next season, which partly explains his hesitation to move to LA. The Lakers reportedly are making some last-ditch efforts to convince the San Antonio Spurs to give up embattled forward Kawhi Leonard in a trade. Getting Leonard would satisfy James’ need for a second star. Apart from Leonard, the Lakers are also in pursuit of Paul George, who has yet to decide on whether to exercise his player option with the Oklahoma City Thunder or become a free agent this summer.

These are the major dominoes that have yet to fall this offseason, but it’s just a matter of time before they do.

REPORT: Sources Close to LeBron James Reveal His True Intentions With Lakers

Rumors and reports regarding LeBron James‘ future in the NBA are now spinning at breakneck speeds, and on Thursday morning, one report by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith seemed like a potential game-changer.

Smith took to his ESPN’s “First Take” to claim that James had reached out to none other than Kevin Durant about possibly joining the Los Angeles Lakers. A move like that, which would send arguably the two most dominant players in the NBA to one team, would without a doubt change the entire NBA landscape.

Unfortunately for Smith, his report was disproved just hours after he had made it.

Smith has been known to make headlines with less-than-accurate statements regarding the world of sports. It seems his sources definitely got their information wrong this time.

Even if James didn’t reach out to Durant about joining the Lakers, other signs are increasingly pointing to the four-time MVP’s intention of signing there. With trade talks between the San Antonio Spurs and the Lakers regarding Kawhi Leonard reportedly heating up, and Paul George‘s decision to opt out of his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, it seems quite possible that James could be headed to L.A. to join another super team.

If that all comes to pass, the Lakers would undeniably become one of the most dangerous teams in the NBA with or without Durant.

Source: Kawhi Leonard reaches out to LeBron James, expresses interest in playing together

Jordan Schultz

Yahoo SportsJune 28, 2018
San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard has reached out to LeBron James, informing the 33-year-old superstar that he wants to play alongside him, a source told Yahoo Sports.

Leonard pitched James on his incredible defensive ability and how it would alleviate the pressure on James, the source said.

On June 15, Yahoo Sports reported that Leonard, 26, wanted to be traded from the Spurs organization, and trade talks with San Antonio regarding Leonard reportedly picked up steam Thursday, with the Lakers expressing interest in a deal.

James has until Friday to opt out of his contract with the Cavs but is expected to become the most coveted player on the market when free agency opens Sunday at midnight ET.

Leonard — a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and two-time First-Team All-NBA selection — possesses the shooting prowess to play on or off the ball, and would seem to be an ideal fit with James. During the 2016-17 season, Leonard had a nearly identical catch-and-shoot percentage as Kevin Durant, per NBA.com stats, while connecting on 38 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Leonard has played seven seasons with the Spurs and was the NBA Finals MVP in 2014.

The Spurs are in no rush to make a deal, and don’t necessarily have to, preferring to try to repair their relationship with Leonard and potentially reward him with a super-max contract. But this certainly adds another layer of intrigue to an already complicated situation involving one of the league’s premier players.

LeBron James declining option, will become free agent

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James will not pick up the player option on the final year of his contract with the Cavaliers and will become an unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN and multiple reports.

James had until 11:59 p.m. ET Friday to inform the Cavs of his intentions before the option expired.

The decision will make the four-time MVP the headliner of a star-studded free-agent class that includes Paul George, Chris Paul and DeMarcus Cousins, among others.

Free agency begins at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday, and the balance of power in the NBA could shift if James chooses to leave Cleveland and create a new superteam with the Los Angeles Lakers or join a burgeoning power such as the Houston Rockets or Philadelphia 76ers. Free agents can't sign contracts until July 6.
