James has bolted as a free agent twice -- in 2010, when his contract was up with Cleveland and he chose the Miami Heat, and in 2014, when he exercised the early termination option in his Heat contract and returned to Cleveland. He also opted out of his contract with the Cavs in 2015 to sign a new "one-plus-one" deal, and then opted out of his contract again in 2016 to sign a new deal with two years guaranteed and a player option for the third year.

That third season -- worth $35.6 million for 2018-19 -- is the option that James is declining.

According to ESPN front-office insider Bobby Marks, Cleveland can offer James a more lucrative deal than any other team -- a five-year max contract in the neighborhood of $205 million. Any other suitor can offer a four-year pact worth $152 million.

Should James re-sign with a shortened one-plus-one deal in Cleveland -- in order to give himself the chance to explore free agency again in the summer of 2019 -- his compensation for 2018-19 would be $35.4 million, and 2019-20 would jump to $38.2 million as the option year.

James, 33, is coming off one of his finest campaigns as a pro in his 15th season. He played all 82 games for the first time and averaged 27.5 points (his most since 2009-10), tied a career high with 8.6 rebounds per game and set a career high with 9.1 assists per game while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.

He followed that up in the playoffs by averaging 34 points, 9.1 rebounds and 9 assists while shooting 53.9 percent. The Cavs advanced to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive season and were swept by the Golden State Warriors.

James finished second in MVP voting, amassing 738 points, behind only first-time winner James Harden of the Rockets (965).

In the days that have led up to James' opt-out decision, the Lakers have jockeyed for position in the race to obtain the three-time champion by ramping up trade talks with the San Antonio Spurs to acquire all-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard, as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

While winning the Leonard sweepstakes would surely cost L.A. several of its young players and draft pick assets, it would guarantee James a legitimate superstar running mate and would not affect the Lakers' ability to offer James a max deal.

The Sixers also have made an offer for Leonard, league sources told ESPN, and would only have to make a few minor roster adjustments in order to free up the cap space to offer James a max deal.

On Monday, James Harden took home hisfirst NBA MVP award, and the voting wasn't particularly close. Harden received 86 of 101 first-place votes, with LeBron James coming in second and Anthony Davis third.

There was little debate as to who deserved the MVP -- a regular-season award -- before the playoffs began, but a spectacular postseason performance from James makes Harden winning the award seem a little odd. Agreeing with that sentiment is LeBron's former teammate and current Boston Celticsguard Kyrie Irving, who made a distinction between "the people's MVP" and "the NBA's MVP" during a radio appearance on Wednesday. Via ESPN:

"MVP, it's hard to gauge nowadays. Because now you have the people's MVP and you have, like, the NBA's MVP," Irving told radio station Hot 97 in New York on Wednesday. "I think the people's MVP was definitely James [Harden], but the NBA MVP is definitely LeBron [James]."

Irving has never been afraid to speak his mind and stir the pot, but his quote speaks to the way that MVP voting has traditionally gone in the NBA. There's sometimes a line drawn between the league's best player and the MVP, with factors like wins and statistical anomalies (for instance, Russell Westbrookaveraging a triple-double) often considered.

There is also a precedent in NBA history of not giving out too many consecutive MVPs to the same player -- only Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird have won three straight. Even when Michael Jordan and theBulls dominated the NBA from 1996-98, Jordan only won two of the MVP awards, with the other going to Karl Malone.

While Irving dubbed Harden "the people's MVP," the fans do not vote on postseason awards -- that honor goes to select media members. But there is a virtual consensus that LeBron has been, and continues to be, the best player in the league, which makes it strange that he hasn't won an MVP since 2013.

LeBron James agrees to four-year, $154 million deal with Lakers

The Decision 3.0 has been made and LeBron James is taking his talents to the Los Angeles Lakers. James has agreed to a four-year, $154 million deal with the team Sunday, according to Klutch Sports.

The 33-year-old James is coming off a season in which he averaged 27.5 points per game with the Cleveland Cavaliers. James led Cleveland to the NBA Finals, but lost to the Golden State Warriors in four games.

Why did James sign with the Lakers?

The Lakers had a large amount of cap space to work with. The team was projected to have a little under $50 million to hand out. That put them in the running to sign not just James, but potentially a few other strong players.

The team can pair James — and whoever else might be coming — with Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma.

In the end, James believed it was the right situation for him. It also helps that the Lakers are one of the game’s premier franchises.

How much money will LeBron James make with the Lakers?

James’ four-year, $154 million contract will net him over $35 million each season, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN.

Here is the breakdown for the LeBron James contract with the Los Angeles Lakers: $35.65M, $37.43M, $39.21M and $41M. He is not eligible for a no trade clause. https://t.co/mA0GyBP4xc

— Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) July 2, 2018

James will make $25.65 million next season. That number will slowly rise over the course of the contract. In his final season with the club, James will make $41 million. He is also not eligible for a no-trade clause.
