San Miguel fights back from 20 points down to stun Rain or Shine in Game One
From: Karlo Sacamos January 5, 2016, 09:23 pm

SAN Miguel Beer stormed back from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to deal Rain or Shine a 109-105 defeat in the opener of their PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series at the Mall of Asia Arena.

June Mar Fajardo scored 36 points and grabbed 18 rebounds while Ronald Tubid and Chris Ross stepped up when the Beermen launched the comeback that razed a 91-71 lead Rain or Shine brought to the final quarter.

Tubid came off the bench to score 15 points while Ross had seven points and seven steals aside from hitting the big three-pointer that put the Beermen up, 108-105, with 1:30 minutes left after a long, arduous chase.

Misses from beyond the three-point arc by fit-again Paul Lee and Jeff Chan in the final seconds sealed Rain or Shine's doom before Arwind Santos made the free throws that wrapped up the win for the Beermen.

“This is unbelievable,” SMB coach Leo Austria said. “I have to give credit to my players especially Chris Ross and Ronald Tubid.”

In all, the Beermen outscored the Elasto Painters, 38-14 in the fourth quarter for an unlikely 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven semifinal series that shifts to Game Two on Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

'Extra Rice' partners JR Quinahan and Beau Belga each had 19 points for Rain or Shine, which led almost throughout but collapsed into a maze of errors when it uncharacteristically lost its poise in the endgame.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao was also slapped with a technical for bumping Ross during an inbound play at a time when his team had the game very much in control.

Ross and Belga were also slapped technicals after the commotion.

The result somehow mirrored the Beermen’s 101-95 victory in Game One of the 2015 Governors’ Cup semis series also against Rain or Shine last July 2, 2015 when SMB fought back from 24 points down.

The scores:

SMB 109 - Fajardo 36, Santos 19, Tubid 15, Cabagnot 9, Lutz 9, Espinas 7, Ross 7, Lassiter 5, Araña 2, De Ocampo 0, Heruela 0.

Rain or Shine 105 - Belga 19, Quinahan 19, Cruz 16, Tiu 12, Almazan 8, Lee 8, Ponferada 8, Norwood 7, Ahanmisi 4, Teng 4, Chan 0, Ibanes 0.

Quarterscores: 21-31, 50-68, 71-91, 109-105

posible, basta makakuha ng halimaw na imports, walang major injuries sa mga key players, at saka never mag under estimate ng makakalaban. in short, palaging gutom manalo at hopefully hindi lalaki ang ulo ng mga team members... :) :D

The way SMB dominated the PBA today, dapat lang mag GrandSlam ulit sila...
Junemar is a beast surrounded by shooters...
Well-coached team din sila...

all they need was one championship last year, nung nakuha na nila experiens paano magchampion e natuto na sila paano magfinish nito.
maturity...
si Cabagi likes his role, even playing side by side with ross..
si Arwind, although dependent on Fajardo, accepts very much the number2 role, mas comportable sya gumalaw pag main man si junemar.
and special mention si Espinas at Yancy, ganda ng pagkkadagdag ng dalawa sa team, more eksperiens atsaka matatapang.
lassiter will always be lassiter, nabawasan na rin ung mga sundot fouls nya...
si Lutz? same as Tubid, stand bys...hehe

Fajardo was obviously the heart and soul of this team, pag nandun sya sa gitna ang ganda parati may naoopen.

Grand slam? no need... importante parating competitive, give chance to Ginebra naman

Mas magiging maganda ang storya for this season pag nag Grandslam...
First to in a championship after being down 0-3 and then nag Grandslam pa...
That would cement the legacy of Junemar, Arwind, Cabagnot, Ross, etc... :D

2017 na ang grandslam ng Ginebra...
Then 2018 ang Purefoods...
2019 Mahindra...

Austria says grand slam not on Beermen's mind as he warns of another SMB hangoverFrom: Karlo Sacamos February 5, 2016, 08:51 pm

SAN Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria hopes his team has learned its lesson from last year’s PBA campaign that saw the Beermen fail to sustain the gains from their Philippine Cup conquest in the Commissioner’s Cup.

The Beermen ruled the all-Filipino conference after outlasting Alaska in seven games last season, but woke up with a championship hangover that resulted in the team losing its first four games in the import-loaded midseason tournament, where it eventually missed the playoffs.

SMB made a successful title defense against the same opponent this season and is on the same path heading into the Commissioner’s Cup which starts on February 10.

“I hope na natuto kami sa mga pangyayaring yun,” Austria said. “After that (all-Filipino) championship, lahat kami umabuso at masyadong ninamnam yung championship at pinagbayaran namin yun.”

The Beermen, powered by import Tyler Wilkerson, have two weeks to recover and prepare before they open their campaign on February 20 against Mahindra.

By conquering the Aces, the Beermen have also remained on track in their bid for a grand slam. The Commissioner’s Cup setback last season denied them of pulling off the rare feat even as they captured the season-ending Governors’ Cup.

“We never think of a grand slam,” Austria insisted. “What’s important is every game. ‘Di ka makakarating dun if you don’t win the current conference.”
“But we’re the only team who can win that because of the all-Filipino championship,” he added.
