Dallas Mavericks: Luka Doncic is the key to their 2019 free agency

The Dallas Mavericks best player is now Luka Doncic. Moreover, Doncic’s rising popularity among players is cause for free agency discussion.

Dallas Mavericks fans could be in for a treat. Dirk Nowitzki‘s nostalgia-filled NBA journey will always melt MFFL’s blue-bleeding hearts. However, Luka Doncic‘s can’t look away play is demanding respect from the NBA’s elite, something Dirk wasn’t able to do in his forgettable rookie campaign.

In a mere two weeks, Doncic was mentioned by LeBron James, Draymond Green, Steph Curry, and Damian Lillard. A list consisting of two multiple regular season MVP winners, a Defensive Player of the Year, and one of the best point guards in the league. To say that’s good company is more of an undersell than Brook Lopez’s agent allowing his client to only sign for $3.2 million last summer.

NBA free agency in the social media era is about as exciting as the playoffs. With NBA reporters’ no-sleep mentality and players blatant recruiting, the NBA news cycle never treads tired waters. In light of the Dennis Smith Jr. trade rumors, there are legitimate questions surrounding Dallas’ rendition of Billy Hoyle and Sidney Deane.

Another month, another honor for Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic became the first Dallas Mavericks rookie to earn the NBA’s Western Conference Rookie of the Month in each of his first three months in the league when he earned the January honor on Friday.

The only other Mavs rookie to earn at least three Rookie of the Month honors was Jay Vincent in 1981-82.

Joel Embiid is the last player to earn the award the first three months of the season in 2016-17. Karl-Anthony Towns is the last Western Conference player to do it in 2015-16.

Doncic averaged 22.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 6.4 assists in 14 games in January. He had two triple-doubles and three 30-point games in the stretch.

He was the first rookie since Steph Curry in 2010 to score 25 or more points in five consecutive games from Jan. 7 to Jan. 16. From Jan. 9 to Jan. 16 he averaged 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in four consecutive games, becoming the first rookie to post such a streak since Michael Jordan in 1984-85.
