How would David West look in Silver and Black?

David West took a risk Monday when he announced he was opting out of his current contract with the New Orleans Hornets to file for free agency.

It’s a gamble for West in a couple of respects. He’s coming off surgery after tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 24.

And he’s also putting aside a chance to earn $7.5 million this season with the Hornets in order to test the free agent market in perhaps the league’s most uncertain economic time ever.

West was in the midst of having a quality season when he went down with his knee injury, averaging a team-leading 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Hornets before missing the final 10 games of the season and the playoffs.

Image

He’s been rehabbing from his injury twice a day and is said to be ahead of schedule as he works at his off-season home in Raleigh, N.C., to prepare for the upcoming season. The injury was expected to idle him for six to eight months, but an extended lockout would obviously give him extra time to prepare as he readies himself for the 2011-12 season.

The most interesting comment he made in a story this morning in the New Orleans Times-Picayune is the primary reason he would potentially bolt from the Hornets.

“I want to win and win big,” West told the Times-Picayune, adding that he decided on his move before the injury.

A team that would fill his need would be the Spurs, coming off a 61-21 season that was the best in the Western Conference before an unexpected first-round series loss to Memphis in the playoffs.

There’s no way that the Spurs could land West the way the NBA’s economic model is currently structured. With too much money tied up into long-term contracts with the core of the team, the Spurs would have to go far over the luxury tax to sign West — a not-so-palatable alternative for team owner Peter Holt.

But who knows how the league’s economic model will be structured after the lockout and the eventual settlement. There might be a way for the Spurs and West to come together — particularly if the Spurs have a chance to offer him similar money to most of the other potential teams where he would play.

West is an outstanding outside shooter with range up to 20 feet with a strong array of inside moves. He turned 30 in April and would provide a strong inside presence that would go well with Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter. West is not the best interior defender, but thrived in Monty Williams’ team defense that limited opponents to 94 points per game to rank fifth in the league.

But there’s also a point of view among some NBA scouts that West’s offensive production has been boosted over the years by playing with Chris Paul with the Hornets.

Most observers have West ranked as the fourth-best potential free agent of this season’s class, trailingly only Nene, Marc Gasol and Tyson Chandler. He’s the best free agent available at power forward — even coming off the injury.

And he’s exactly the kind of player the Spurs desparately need if they want to contend for the NBA title.

But it will be interesting to see what kind of demand there is for West after the lockout ends.

Wouldn't mind seeing D-west in silver and black.

does the SPURS have enough CAP space to acquire a marquee free agent, let's say like a MARC GASOL, NENE or a DAVID WEST?.. :)
well, i guess teams must wait first for the new CBA before they could decide who to pursue or even sign.. :?

No but duncan can opt out of his contract and sign for less money so the spurs can have some money to sign a free agent. It won't be much so i doubt any big free agent would come to san antonio

It depends on how much money he wants to make. West opt out cuz he probably wants more money. Duncan makes 21 million a year so it depends on how much he want to make next year. If he opt out and resign for around 15 million then spurs could spend those 6 million to lure agent but it won't be a big one like gasol-chandler-nene or even west. Those guys wants more money.

Mike Monroe: It only gets harder for owners, players

The NBA’s Board of Governors met Tuesday in Dallas and heard a report on collective bargaining from Spurs owner Peter Holt, chairman of its labor relations committee.

The league wouldn’t reveal if the board officially authorized locking out the players once the clock strikes midnight Thursday, the end of the collective bargaining agreement that’s been in place since 2005, but it doesn’t matter. As commissioner David Stern has warned already, such a vote is a mere formality and can be conducted by any means at any time.

The first lockout authorization via text message may be mere hours away.

Holt’s committee will meet with the negotiating committee of the National Basketball Player’s Association on Thursday, but no last-minute breakthrough is expected.

Image

Here’s the truly bad news: Once the lockout begins, the standoff is going to get nastier.

According to NBA executives familiar with the league’s strategies, once the lockout is in place, the owners will push for a hard salary cap of $45 million, the elimination of guaranteed contracts and ask that the players swallow a 33 percent salary cut.

The concessions made in recent weeks, including the “flex cap” of $62 million and a guarantee of $2 billion in annual player payroll, will be off the table.

If this seems certain to guarantee the loss of the entire 2011-12 season, it is because there are owners who think it is necessary for the long-term viability of the league.

The players likely know this is coming because hints have been leaked for weeks. How they react to the old, hard line once the anticipated stoppage begins will determine the prospects for next season.

During the 1998 lockout, a settlement was reached the day before the NBA said it would cancel the entire season.

This would be the prudent course of action, but the anticipated hardening of the league’s stance may move the union to decertify, an action that has been called its “nuclear option” since under U.S. labor law, it would remove the antitrust exemption from the league.

Anyone who has followed the NFL’s labor impasse knows this is what the NFLPA chose. Jeffrey Kessler serves as outside counsel for the NFLPA and the NBPA, so it is clear which path he prefers.

And if decertification happens?

Expect another antitrust lawsuit that will take months, perhaps years, to make its way through the courts.

The two sides have been working on a new deal for the better part of two years, so you have to wonder how they’ve approached the 11th hour still miles apart from an agreement.

Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver will have us believe it is because the league’s business model is broken and requires a new system. The trouble with this argument is that owning a professional sports team is more of a hobby than business for many of the owners.

Do you think Mark Cuban, who has a Forbes Magazine wealth estimate of $2.5 billion, loses sleep over the money he likely will lose on last season’s Mavericks, who had a player payroll in excess of $90 million (plus luxury taxes under the soon-to-expire CBA)?

Not when he gets to sleep with the Larry O’Brien Trophy, as he admitted to after his team won the NBA title earlier this month.

That’s not part of any business model Harvard MBA candidates study.

There are owners for whom the model no longer works well for, and Holt may be one of them. If small-market teams such as the Spurs want to remain competitive, a hard cap would help, but so would revenue sharing among the league’s 30 teams. But that is something Holt’s fellow owners must agree to do, and that won’t be any easier than striking a deal with the players.

There is a deal to be struck, on all issues, because there always is.

Time has run out on the easy route.

Beginning Friday morning, the real difficulty begins.

Should Spurs target Aaron Gray?

New Orleans Hornets big man Aaron Gray has informed his team that he will be opting out of his contract and testing the waters of free agency:

Image

The New Orleans Hornets lost another player to unrestricted free agency Monday afternoon when backup center Aaron Gray informed the team he was opting out of the last year of his contract.

Gray stood to earn $1.06 million next season if he had picked up his option, Earlier in the day, the Hornets lost veteran power forward David West, who decided to walk away from the last year of his contract.

"I think he really enjoyed being with New Orleans, the opportunity to come free made it a good time to explore the market for him," said Jason Zanik, one of Gray's representatives, who added that Gray isn't concerned about the uncertainty of the NBA's labor situation.

Though the Spurs have started the offseason by making some aggressive moves in the draft, the team remains woefully undersized compared to its Western Conference competitors. At 7'0" and 270 pounds, Aaron Gray would make a great target for a team trying to increase its big man bona fides. In twelve minutes of play per game for the Hornets, Gray averaged a little over four rebounds and three points per game; however, with a contract option of a little over $1 million he would be a remarkably cheap addition to a very top heavy Spurs' payroll.

With the potential of a lock-out looming and several expensive contracts on the books, the Spurs will have to take some chances on some "lesser knowns" if they want to build a roster to compete immediately for a championship in what in all liklihood will be Tim Duncan's final season. The opportunity to study under Duncan, and the chance to play for a championship-ready team have to be attractive to a guy like Gray who, at 27, is in the mid to later stages of his career.
