First game of back-to-back double tough win for S.A.

TORONTO — A rookie tossed the great Tim Duncan to the ground late in the fourth quarter Sunday. Then Jonas Valanciunas beat the rest of the Spurs to the other end for a pair of game-tying free throws.

That was the first sign the Toronto Raptors were not going to let the Spurs get away to Washington without a fight.

By the end of the first overtime, when DeMar DeRozan bird-dogged his own miss to force more free basketball, the Spurs knew what they were in for.

The Spurs ultimately survived their latest trip to the Air Canada Centre with a Duncan-and-Tony-Parker engineered 111-106 victory. It took two overtimes to complete against a Raptors team that has been more luckless than hapless this season.

“We had to work hard for this one,” said Parker, who finished with 32 points, narrowly missing a new season scoring high for the third game in a row.

If winless Washington records its first victory of the season tonight against the Spurs, the Wizards should send a thank-you card to Toronto.

The Spurs had to break a sweat, and lean on Parker for 46 minutes and Duncan for 41, to escape Canada with a win.

Duncan added a season-best 26 points for the Spurs, who were outrebounded, out-energized and outplayed for much of the game, yet left Canada on a three-game winning streak, talking like plucky underdogs who had just pulled off an upset over the 3-11 Raptors.

“I love the character of our team,” Parker said. “We hung in there.”

Just as they had two nights earlier in Indiana, the Spurs (11-3) figured out a way to win despite being brutalized on the boards, giving up 17 offensive rebounds good for 27 Toronto second-chance points.

Three Raptors notched at least 20 points, with Valanciunas’ season-high 22 supplementing DeRozan’s 29 and Kyle Lowry chipping in 20. Ed Davis added 15 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.

“In a lot of ways, they played better than we did,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

All of that got clouded by a horrific afternoon from Andrea Bargnani, who aside from one stout defensive play against Parker at the close of regulation, did more harm than good for the Raptors.

Fresh off a 34-point game at Detroit, Bargnani clanged his way through a career-worst 2-for-19 game that, by the end, had Torontonians calling for more playing time for Davis.

“You always hope for the next one,” said Toronto coach Dwane Casey, defending the call to stick with Bargnani. “He had 34 the night before.”

The Raptors led by as many as nine in the second half before the Spurs rallied, once again riding their Big Three through the tough moments.

Manu Ginobili had a tough shooting day (5 of 15, 1 of 7 from 3-point range), but scored all 15 of his points after halftime. His eight-point third quarter, which included back-to-back acrobatic drives for 3-point plays, kept the Spurs afloat.

Twice, the Spurs probably had a chance to finish the game earlier and get a head start to the airport, but could not. Valanciunas’ block of Duncan, setting up the tying free throws at the other end — followed in turn by Bargnani’s defense of Parker on the Spurs’ final possession of regulation — sent the game into the first OT. Near the end of that quarter, Gary Neal missed one of two game-sealing free throws, allowing DeRozan to tie the game again on a putback with 0.9 seconds to go.

By the time the teams lined up to tip off the second OT, officials probably could have just called the game with a coin flip.

“Anybody could have won the thing,” Popovich said.

Toronto pulled within two points on a Lowry layup with 2:11 left in the second OT, but Parker followed with a pair of tough jumpers, and Duncan hit a couple of free throws to put the Spurs’ margin to six, their largest of the afternoon.

“It was just persistence,” Duncan said. “A lot of up-and-down plays, but we just kind of stuck with it.”

And so, the Spurs finally boarded their charter flight Sunday tired but not beaten, seeing the silver lining in the Canadian clouds.

At least they didn’t work so hard to come away empty.

Spurs playing Heat without 4 regulars

MIAMI (AP) -- San Antonio is playing at Miami on Thursday night without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green, who were sent home by Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to rest.
Duncan, Parker and Green are starters. Ginobili is the team's top reserve.
Popovich says the decision was made when he saw the schedule, and that it had nothing to do with facing the Heat. Thursday's game was the sixth road contest in nine nights for the Spurs, who won the previous five on the trip.
Popovich has made similar moves in the past to rest his older players, such as Duncan. He says he added Green to the list on Thursday because he's logged a lot of minutes. Green has played a team-high 496 minutes in San Antonio's first 16 games.

Isa lang ibig sbhin nito, minamaliit ni Popo ang Heat...
