Trade deadline predictions for the Spurs. (Not saying they'll actually make a trade, just throwing out some predictions)

-The Spurs will trade Matt Bonner and Nando De Colo + filler to the Milwaukee Bucks for Ersan Ilyasova. (Ilyasova has asked to be traded, reportedly tired of the Bucks' roster turnover and potential rebuilding plans, Ilyasova could thrive in a more stable environment where he knows exactly what's expected of him. And if he could get his game to where it was the past two seasons, the Spurs would be getting that elusive stretch four that also excels on the boards.)

-Spurs send Danny Green, Matt Bonner, and a 2014 first round draft pick to Sixers for Thaddeus Young. (-It benefits the Spurs, because it gives them two young, multi-talented wings in Young and Kawhi Leonard, It makes sense for Philly, because they take on an expiring contract in Bonner, a nice young 3 & D guy in Green, and another first rounder in a deep draft.)

The Spurs swapped point guard Nando De Colo for Toronto small forward Austin Daye just before Thursday’s 2 p.m. trade deadline, a modest deal that typified what was largely an uneventful day throughout the NBA. The trade was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

Buried behind a backlog of point guards that included Tony Parker, Cory Joseph and Patty Mills, De Colo was never able to establish himself after joining the Spurs before the 2012-13 season. He averaged 4.0 points and 1.7 assists in 98 games with the Spurs. De Colo tweeted confirmation of the trade later in the afternoon.

The 6-11, 200-pound Daye has had similar struggles since entering the NBA as the 15th pick of the 2009 draft. The Spurs are his fourth team after averaging 5.4 points in 245 appearances with Detroit, Memphis and the Raptors. He is averaging 1.0 point on 23-percent shooting in eight games this season.

His arrival provides another body along the perimeter, which had been rendered dangerously thin over the past month-plus with injuries to Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green. The latter two have returned, and Leonard is expected to do so as soon as Friday against Phoenix.

But even when fully healthy, the one major hole in the Spurs’ depth was a true backup for Leonard in the event that Green, Ginobili and/or Marco Belinelli aren’t suitable for that night’s particular matchup. Sub-par as he’s been so far, Daye could at least fills a role the Spurs have previously tried to fill with the D-League’s Othyus Jeffers and NBA veteran Shannon Brown, who is nearing the end of his second 10-day contract with the Spurs.

Daye enjoyed two solid collegiate seasons at Gonzaga, averaging 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds as a sophomore before entering the 2009 at 20. A summary of his pre-draft scouting report at NBAdraft.net:

An extremely versatile player with great height and length for the SF position…Has one of the nicer release in all of college basketball…Needs to add substantial weight and muscle if he is to ever reach his true potential…Easily thrown off balance and forced into tough shots by stronger defenders.

Daye, now 25, appeared to be on the verge of breaking out as a professional after averaging 7.5 points and shooting 40.1 percent on 3-pointers in his second season with the Pistons in 2010-11. But Daye’s playing time has steadily dwindled in ensuing stints with Memphis and Toronto.

An excerpt from a less flattering assessment at Grizzlies blog Grizzly Bear Blues after the 2012-13 season:

What can you say about a guy like Austin Daye? Seriously, I’m not being cute, I am honestly not sure what I can say about him here that won’t get me suspended from the site. When we acquired Daye, I described him as “stretch four fodder,” and that was really being generous. Daye didn’t really do much to help Memphis. His offensive game is limited to spot up shooting, and his defensive game is nonexistent, to put it mildly.

Daye’s 2014-15 contract becomes fully guaranteed for $1.06 million after July 30.
