Rivers: No major roster changes needed for Spurs
LAS VEGAS – The Spurs reminded Doc Rivers of a lesson he learned in Boston as head coach of the Celtics.

When you win the Larry O’Brien Trophy, very few changes, if any, are needed to repeat.

Rivers, who was in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League games said the Spurs are in a great position.

Why? They made few changes to the championship team that helped capture the organization’s fifth title.
So far, the Spurs have re-signed three of their four free agents — Patty Mills, Boris Diaw, and Matt Bonner — picked up the contract of Austin Daye, and a front office official has told the Express-News they would like to retain forward Aron Baynes if the price is reasonable.

Baynes is a restricted free agent, giving the Spurs the ability to match any offer. The official said the Spurs won’t match any crazy offer, but if reasonable, he’ll be back in San Antonio.

Should Baynes return, the Spurs would have returned the entire championship squad while adding first round draft pick Kyle Anderson.

With Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili also returning, in Rivers’ eyes, the Spurs are already in position to repeat.

“The mistake we made,” the Clippers head coach said of his time in Boston, “if we made a mistake, we didn’t bring back the same team. You think about Miami, the first two years they won it; they bought back the same team. When you think about (this past season), Mike Miller wasn’t there; they made changes. The Spurs rarely take away. They keep adding.”

After the Celtics won the NBA title in 2008, two players didn’t return the following season (guard Sam Cassell and forward P.J. Brown). The Celtics lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to the Orlando Magic in 2009.

“If I can get in that situation again,” Rivers said, “that would be something I’ve learned. You win it, don’t change that team. Keep that team and then add to it.”

Rivers also feels the Spurs will handle winning the title better than most.

He said some players can’t deal with the success after winning a championship — egos get bigger and role players may think they’re all of a sudden stars. He doesn’t see that being a problem with the Spurs.

“I think a lot of teams, when they win it, it’s hard,” Rivers said. “All of a sudden, everybody becomes a star and they don’t know how to handle that. But the Spurs have a perfect team. They’re already over themselves so there is no issues there”

No one is expecting a repeat to be easy and the Spurs know this.

The Spurs tried to add a piece to the roster when they went after Pau Gasol, but he chose to join the Chicago Bulls.

The Clippers did add some pieces, which Rivers hopes can help dethrone the Spurs.

Among the Clippers offseason signings were Jordan Farmar, C.J. Wilcox, and Spencer Hawes.

Rivers admitted the Clippers tried to add forward Paul Pierce, but a sign-and-trade to obtain Pierce wasn’t available for the Clippers.

No matter how many moves are made, though, the goal is to beat the Spurs in an extremely tough Western Conference.

“They are the team you have to beat,” Rivers said. “But listen, we were the third team in the West. … In the West, you have to beat all eight. The West is a monster.”

basta walang yayabang na role players to ruin team harmony SA will have a good chance of a repeat

Summer Spurs 100, Milwaukee 74: Where Kyle Anderson turns the right kind of heads
LAS VEGAS — For the better part of the week, fans packed UNLV’s Cox Pavilion to get a glimpse of Cleveland rookie Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 pick in last month’s draft.

They flocked to see Milwaukee’s Jabari Parker, whose build and offensive game recalls a young Carmelo Anthony.

Basketball crazies quickly here came to crush on Utah’s Dante Exum, an Australian mystery man who won over standing-room only crowds with a blend of size, athleticism and vision.

Even Chicago’s Doug McDermott had his day, throwing in 31 points against Denver early in Summer League competition.

As for the Spurs’ top rookie? Kyle Anderson has turned heads in Las Vegas, too. If you know which heads to ask.

“If you look at a box score, most of the time you’re going to look at scoring,” Spurs assistant Ime Udoka said. “He’s not going to be a huge scorer every night. As long as he’s making the right play, we’re happy with that.”

There are reasons Anderson, selected 30th overall, fell to the last pick of the first round. These have been on display through the Spurs’ first four games at Summer League.

Anderson, 20, is not exactly fleet afoot. He can barely jump over a small-town phone book. His defense is suspect.

There are also reasons the Spurs were eager to snap up Anderson, and these have been on display as well.

“Guys that like to pass, guys that know how to play, guys who are slow and can’t jump, they fit pretty good in San Antonio,” general manager R.C. Buford said.

A 6-foot-8 point-forward, Anderson turned in his best outing of Summer League on Wednesday, with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting in a 100-71 demolition of the Bucks.

Parker, the more highly touted first-round rookie on the floor at Thomas & Mack Center, had 16 points and bulled his way to the free-throw line for 13 attempts.

In a way, Anderson’s skill-set isn’t built for a Summer League showcase. His game is subtle, and in Las Vegas they don’t do subtle.

The Spurs view Anderson’s inaugural Summer League merely as the first step in a developmental process that will continue with individual workouts back in San Antonio, leading into training camp in October and the preseason.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

“It’s a learning opportunity for us and for him,” Buford said from the bleachers at Thomas & Mack. “We’ve got a lot to learn. He’s got an unusual skill set. It’s going to cause us to be purposeful in how we play with him, how we use him and how we help him.”

congrats for winning 100 -74
maganda potential ng rookie na ito to be useful sa goals ng SA next season, lalong lumalim ang bench nila
