VINTAGE JOHNNY A SPARKS BIG GINEBRA WIN

Kings’ 3rd straight win puts them in joint 2nd

Thursday, 22 March 2007

Minus the prolific backcourt tandem of Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa, coach Jong Uichico is convinced his Barangay Ginebra Kings are still in good hands with Johnny Abarrientos around.

Uichico’s conviction comes with good basis.

Abarrientos had another sterling performance Thursday night as Barangay Ginebra smothered Coca-Cola, 101-97, for a third straight win and a share of second place in the 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

"I’m playing about 30 minutes a game. Wala si Jayjay, ginagawa ko lang ang trabaho na dapat kong gawin," said Abarrientos as he continued to recall his vintage form, leading the Ginebra charge in the absence of Helterbrand and Caguioa.

Rod Nealy had a near triple-double job with 26 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists but Abarrientos came to the fore in fuelling Ginebra’s decisive fourth-quarter breakaway.

The 1996 MVP awardee came up with another solid all-round game which he punctuated with clutch plays in the payoff period as Ginebra tripped Coca-Cola to gain a piece of second place with Red Bull and Alaska on their identical 3-1 win-loss slates.

The former FEU King Tamaraw scored 16 points, including seven straight midway through the payoff period that gave the Kings their biggest lead in the game at 97-84.

Abarrientos also logged five steals, four rebounds and the same number of assists as the Kings posted a third consecutive victory after dropping their first game in the tourney against the Alaska Aces.

Sunday Salvacion, Mark Macapagal, Eric Menk and Rudy Hatfield had their contributions as the Kings handed the Tigers a second loss in five outings.

Anthony Johnson actually led all scorers with 32 points but sat down the last 40.6 seconds of play due to leg cramps.

But Johnson was still on the floor when Abarrientos came through with his biggest plays, helping the Kings sprint away from a 90-84 lead.

"You slow down as you get older. But I’ve been given the minutes and I want to stand up to the challenge I’m facing," said Abarrientos.

Salvacion and Macapagal delivered the points in the third quarter as Ginebra gained headway from a 55-all halftime count, posting two eight-point spreads at 69-61 and 71-63.

But Johnson and Avenido keyed a Coca-Cola fightback and the Tigers surged ahead at 78-76 towards the end of the third period.

Egay Echavez scored on a drive to force a 78-all deadlock going into the final period.

The first half ended at 55-all on a buzzer-beating jumper by Johnson from right quartercourt. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 101 – Nealy 26, Abarrientos 16, Salvacion 14, Macapagal 13, Menk 10, Hatfield 9, Echavez 7, Tubid 6, Mamaril 0.

Coca-Cola 97 – Johnson 32, Arigo 13, Peek 12, Miranda 7, Antonio 6, Yeo 5, Misolas 4, Caceres 2.

Quarterscores: 29-33, 55-55, 78-78, 101-97.

Barangay Ginebra bounces back to earn its first win in the championship series. A furious rally in the 3rd quarter did it for the Gin Kings as it massacred the San Miguel Beermen 131-101.

GINEBRA ASSERTS MASTERY OVER BEERMEN

Nealy’s 43 fuels Kings’ 4th win in a row
Sunday, 25 March 2007

They offered a minute of silence for the late league commissioner Jun Bernardino then the Barangay Ginebra Kings and the San Miguel Beermen plunged into action as the PBA, though in mourning, went on with the show at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

The Kings emerged triumphant, pulling off a 102-84 victory as they kept their mastery of the Beermen whom they have beaten in six games in the recent Philippine Cup.

Dating back to the first conference, the Kings made it five in a row over the Beermen in their head-on collisions, sustaining their juggernaught to regain a piece of second place with the Red Bull Barakos and the Alaska Aces in the season-ending 2007 Talk N Text Fiesta Conference.

Rod Nealy missed by two points what could have been a new season high individual output. He finished with 43 and added 17 rebounds, leading the Kings to a fourth straight win after a losing debut against the Alaska Aces.

Rudy Hatfield had his own double-double game with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Kings kept the Beermen winless in the tourney in five games.

San Miguel has been winless the last nine games now dating back to the All-Filipino Finals.

"It’s good while we’re still working on many things in our game, we’re winning games," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico after beating former assistant Siot Tanquingcen in their first meeting after the latter’s return to San Miguel.

"We’re getting there, finding the right way to win. Problema lang nagiging stagnant kami. It happened in some parts of tonight’s game. Luckily, we pulled through in the end," Uichico also said.

It was a bizarre game where the Kings imposed their will in the first quarter, the Beermen returned the compliment in the next then the Kings made another
swashbuckling run in the third.

The Kings squandered a 21-point first-half lead before reestablishing control in the second half, taking two 18-point bulges at 81-63 and 83-85.

Falling behind by 21 at 15-36 early in the second period, the Beermen waged a big fightback to seize the lead, 49-48, at the half.

San Miguel even led by eight, 49-41, towards the end of the second period behind the guns of Paul McMillan, Chris Calaguio and Olsen Racela.

McMillan also finished with huge numbers with 41 points and 12 rebounds.

However, only one local San Miguel player in Calaguio provided double-digit contribution with 11.

The Kings, however, kept the Beermen from pulling away.

Nealy and Hatfield joined forces in the third quarter, combining for 28 as Ginebra regained control at 81-63.

Johnny Abarrientos, Ronald Tubid and Mark Macapagal then also made their presence felt as the Kings sustained their charge in the fourth and completed the win. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 102 – Nealy 43, Hatfield 22, Tubid 14, Abarrientos 10, Macapagal 5, Echavez 2, Mamaril 2, Salvacion 2, Santos 2, Holper 0.

San Miguel 84 – McMillan 41, Calaguio 11, Gonzales 7, Cablay 7, Espinas 6, Tenorio 5, Racela 5, Pena 2, Adducul 0, Adriano 0.

Quarterscores: 34-15, 48-49, 81-63, 102-84.

TAGAY!

Dito po sa amin lahat masaya
Dahil kampeon ang Barangay Ginebra
Bawat kanto ay may tagayan
Kahit malasing, ayos lang yan!
Walang imposible po sa amin
Kahit sinong team ilalampaso namin
Ganyan po kami kung sumuporta
Sa'ming koponan na BARANGAY GINEBRA!

Chorus:
Tagay muna ka-barangay, tayong lahat ay magpugay
GINEBRA isigaw natin ng sabay sabay!

Ngunit ang kampeonato hindi madali
Sa semis pa lang kami'y nangingiwi
Mga kalaban naglalakihan
Basta Taulava, Walang iyakan!
Ang Ginebra ay humarurot
Parang isang tren na bumulusok
Buong barangay ay nagsigawan
Nang si Cardona ay lumisan

(Repeat Chorus)

Nang ang kampeonato ay nagumpisa
Utol na Beermen kontra Ginebra
Dalawang laro ay puro sablay
Umuwing luhaan ang mga Barangay
Ngunit sa Araw ng mga Puso
Ang Barangay ay walang puso
Ang mga Beermen ay tinagay
Kulang na lang ilibing ng buhay!

(Repeat Chorus)

Aming koponan ay kampeon na naman
Sabi ng ilan 'masusundan pa yan!'
Ngayon pa lang humanda na kayo
Dahil ang Ginkings yayariin kayo!
Sa umaga ang sarap gumising
Kapag ang champion ay ang Ginkings
Patay kung patay para lang sa Ginebra
Ganyan kami kung sumuporta!
