MAGNOLIA, TNT Triumph

LORDY Tugade scored a career-high 34 points to help Magnolia hold off sister-team Ginebra, 101-90, as the Beverage Masters won for the fifth time in eight games in the Smart-PBA Philippine Cup last night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The player dubbed the ‘Alaminos Assasin’ performed like a true executioner, scattering fourth-quarter points on top of pulling down seven rebounds as Magnolia rebounded from a shocking loss to Welcoat to book its fifth win in eight games.

“What can I say? Even I as a coach enjoyed watching his shooting skills,” said Magnolia coach Siot Tanquingcen of Tugade, who only had two points in the setback against the Dragons.

“But we should remember that this is a team effort,” said Tanquingcen.

The Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals joined the Beverage Master at second spot with a 113-88 beating of the Coca-Cola Tigers.

The Phone Pals virtually settled the issue as early as the third period, leading 90-62.

They padded the lead to as many as 30 points on a basket by Felix Belano early in the fourth, 92-62.

Eric Menk led the Gin Kings with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Jay Helterbrand contributed 17 points and nine assists and Ronald Tubid added 15 markers for the Gin Kings, who never really got a big game from Mark Caguioa.

Caguioa, playing in his second game after coming back from a shoulder injury, played for 28 minutes and only had 10 points on a horrendous 4-of-15 shooting.

Both teams actually came into the match fresh from losses. The Gin Kings went down to the Air21 Express 95-102, after getting outscored 21-5 in the last five minutes.

Magnolia won despite committing 23 turnovers, and its shooting percentage practically saved it from absorbing its first back-to-back losses in the tournament. The Beverage Masters shot 50.8 percent from the two-point field and 55.6 percent from three-point land, where Tugade appeared impossible to stop with a 5-of-9 clip.

And he was most devastating in the final period, when the going went tough and rough and the Gin Kings refusing to say die – as they always do – despite the hot hands of the former Red Bull star.

Tugade, whose previous scoring high was 31 with Red Bull two seasons ago, had a spectacular three-pointer that hit the backboard and went in, giving the Beverage Masters an 89-76 bulge with 4:20 left to play.

Ginebra, the defending champion, came closest to within 90-96 on a triple from Ronald Tubid with 1:20 remaining. But Dondon Hontiveros had a split, and Tugade capped his performance with a scooping lay-up that hit the front of the rim before rolling in – the shot that sealed the victory.

The Gin Kings went down to their sixth defeat with only two wins to show, just one notch ahead of bottom-dweller Coca-Cola (1-6).

The scores:
Magnolia (101) – Tugade 34, Hontiveros 16, Villanueva 14, Racela 9, Seigle 9, Tenorio 7, Eman 3, Gonzales 3, Calaguio 3, Ildefonso 3.

Ginebra (90) – Menk 22, Helterbrand 17, Tubid 15, Mamaril 10, Caguioa 10, reavies 7, Escalona 5, Aquino 3, Holper 1, Macapagal 0, Salvacion 0.

Quarterscores: 27-21; 44-37; 73-64; 101-90.

woohoo :celebrate: :celebrate: :celebrate:
