Great win by our boys. The twin-tower combination of Edu-Sotto and the backcourt of Ildefonso-Panopio are solid. Definitely the future of Philippine basketball.

One glaring thing I noticed: prone to errors.

First possession pa lang against UAE, error na kaagad. Dapat bawasan yan against tougher competition like China or Korea.

Dave Ildefonso shares Under-19 World Cup dream with dad Danny I
by LANCE AGCAOILI

DAVE Ildefonso is upbeat about wearing the national team jersey again after three years as he and the under-18 basketball team compete in the FIBA U-18 Asia Championship in Thailand from Sunday to August 11.

Ildefonso is returning to Batang Gilas since he last played in SEABA 2015 and FIBA U-16 Asia Championship, where they failed to get a World Cup berth.

Now that he is back, the son of PBA legend, Danny Ildefonso, is seeking to fulfill their family’s dream.

“Siyempre gusto ko makapasok naman sa World Cup kasi 'yun ‘yung goal namin ni tatay,” the 17-year-old Ildefonso said. “At saka it’s a big thing talaga to play against the best people all around the world.”

The 6-foot-4 winger added that having a good finish in their tournament could redeem the country’s string of misfortunes last month, when the men’s basketball team had an ugly brawl with Australia in their second round duel in the FIBA Asia Championship and the controversial withdrawal of Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas in the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.

“I think we’re part din doon sa redeeming process and it’s really great help for the Filipino basketball fans if we can be able to pull this off,” he said.

Batang Gilas Head Coach Josh Reyes has been insisting that they need the scoring prowess of Ildefonso as they take on Lebanon on Sunday, face UAE on Monday before battling powerhouse China on Tuesday in Group B.

Ildefonso knows his role as a scorer and also promises to give his all on both offensive and defensive ends.

“Siguro I’m one of the best scorers doon sa teams talaga and the team really needs that from me and hindi lang naman ‘yun ‘yung mabibigay ko para sa team,” he said. “I can play defense on which ever position.”

Also as one of the few incoming college players in the team, Ildefonso believes that his experience and leadership will help the team.

“I think it’s really helpful kasi more experienced kami and ‘yung play of college and high school is really different and I think if you compare international basketball to Philippines basketball, it’s more leaning towards college basketball,” he said.

“I think it’s really one of our roles sa team to be able to mentor them and make them better players.”

For the Ateneo Blue Eaglet-turned-NU Bulldog, regardless of the result, the national team experience will be a big boost when he enters the collegiate basketball scene and even a stepping stone in his dream to be part of the men’s national basketball team for the 2023 Fiba World Cup that the Philippines is co-hosting.

“Personally, I think this can really help me. This is a stepping stone eh. National team is always a stepping stone to become a better player, become a known player and to be able to reach my dream din and to be on the radar of other coaches,” Ildefonso said.

“I think this is taking me an inch closer to my dream to being able to play sa 2023 sa World Cup sa Philippines.”

Batang Gilas rolls past Lebanon for rousing Fiba U18 Asia startby RANDOLPH B. LEONGSON
A DAY AGO

BATANG Gilas started off its 2018 Fiba Under-18 Asian Championship on a good note, thumping Lebanon, 75-53, Sunday at Stadium 29 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Dave Ildefonso showed off his veteran know-hows, dropping all of his 19 points in the first half, where the Philippines built a 41-33 halftime edge and establish control of the game.

Britain-based Fil-Nigerian center AJ Edu poured a double-double of 17 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks, as fellow tower Kai Sotto added his own 12 points and eight boards.

Dalph Panopio was as stellar in his Batang Gilas debut, finishing with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Filipinos’ height advantage was truly evident in the duel, dominating the boards with 68 rebounds to Lebanon’s 41.

Batang Gilas now shifts its focus against United Arab Emirates at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.

Alexander Frederick Zanbaka was the lone bright spot for the Lebanese with 12 points and five rebounds in the losing effort.

AJ Edu provides spark in Batang Gilas' breezy win over UAEby RANDOLPH B. LEONGSON
11 HOURS AGO

BATANG Gilas continued to impose its dominance in the paint, this time blowing out United Arab Emirates, 92-49, for its second win in the 2018 Fiba Under-18 Asian Championship on Monday at Bangkok Thai-Japan Youth Center in Thailand.

AJ Edu scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half and grabbed eight rebounds as he led the Pinoy teens in a 10-0 starting barrage that led to an 29-14 lead at the end of the first quarter before cruising to the easy victory.

The win was made more easy by Batang Gilas' dominance off the boards, 66-26, and the paint, 40-22, as the tallest national youth team ever assembled put together a fitting follow-up to an opening romp against Lebanon.

Kai Sotto added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Raven Cortez made up for his silent offensive night from the field by grabbing 13 boards to compliment his six points as the two did their damage in the third frame.

Xyrus Torres also lit it up from downtown, going for four triples to account for all of his 12 points, while Rhayyan Amsali came off the bench and scored 13 points to go with five rebounds.

Undefeated through its first two games, the Philippines will stake its claim to pole position in Group B when it faces powerhouse China on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

Batang Gilas showed no mercy even when it led by a big margin, clamping down on defense to hold UAE scoreless for the first six minutes of the payoff period to come away with the 43-point rout.

Mohamed Mahmoud Asad Ahmed Alhashmi paced the still winless UAE side (0-2) with 18 points and three rebounds in the losing cause.

The scores:

PHILIPPINES 92 – Edu 16, Sotto 14, Amsali 13, Torres 12, Panopio 7, Abadiano 6, Cortez 6, Lina 6, Ramirez 5, Oczon 3, Chiu 2, Ildefonso 2.

UAE 49 – Alhashmi 18, Albreiki 11, Hussein 8, Ablooshi 4, Abloushi 4, Almaeeni 4, S. Alhammadi 0, Alhosani 0, Alketbi 0, Alsawan 0.

Quarters: 29-14, 50-31, 69-41, 92-49.
