Faeldon to replace Bato as BuCor chief

GMA News wrote:

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed former Bureau of Customs (BOC) commissioner Nicanor Faeldon as the new director general of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Friday.

Faeldon, currently the deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, was chosen to replace Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, who is running for senator in the 2019 midterm elections.

"The DOJ has interposed no objections to the proposed appointment of Mr. Faeldon, and is now seeking the favorable endorsement of the Civil Service Commission as part of the requirements under the Bureau of Corrections Act of 2013," Guevarra told reporters in a message.

A former military officer, Faeldon resigned from the BOC late last year following the controversy over the smuggling of billions of pesos worth of shabu from China.

Duterte, who once described Faeldon as an "honest man," said the latter had offered to resign from the BOC three times. The president then hinted that another government post awaited the embattled ex-Customs chief.

Months later, Faeldon was appointed to the Office of Civil Defense, replacing Rodolfo Santillan.

Faeldon was detained at the Senate for refusing to testify at a blue ribbon committee probe into the P6.4-billion shabu shipment last year.

In November, the Department of Justice cleared him of drug smuggling charges as it indicted several others.

The illegal drug importation case against Customs broker Mark Ruben Taguba II, shipment consignee Eirene Mae Tatad and their other-co-accused, who include some Chinese and Taiwanese nationals, are presently lodged before the Manila Regional Trial Court.

More recently, Faeldon said he would be willing to return to jail amid issues about the amnesty granted in 2010 to former mutineers, after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, one of the rebel soldiers, saw his amnesty coverage "revoked" by Duterte.

“Sa akin, I’m willing to go back to jail. Let’s just follow the process if the process we have gone through is not in accordance with the Constitution,” Faeldon said last month.

“Let’s all go back to jail and restart the process,” he said, adding that he had been jailed six times.

^^Recycled cabinet appointee acting like atapang-a-tao dahil nakasandal sa pader sa presidenteng nagsabing "even a whiff of corruption" ay tanggal na sa pwesto. This in the midst of a multi billion peso smuggling case.

Go neck-neck mo. :biglaugh:

Carpio accepts SC chief nomination

Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has accepted his automatic nomination for the Chief Justice post.

Carpio himself confirmed in a text message that he was officially joining the chief justice race.

Carpio earlier declined the nomination, saying he does not want to benefit from a proceeding that he opposed. President Rodrigo Duterte then appointed Teresita Leonardo-De Castro who served as Chief Justice for one month and a half.

Carpio’s nomination will determine if Duterte will stay true to his word that seniority was his biggest factor in appointing De Castro.

Carpio has not minced words in criticizing the government’s inaction on China’s militarization on the disputed islands in the West Philippine Sea.

  :D

can't he think of a more safer none hypocritical statement other than that?

Duterte denies Chinese businessman is his economic adviser
By: Nestor Corrales - Reporter / @NCorralesINQ INQUIRER.net / 11:51 PM October 09, 2018

President Rodrigo Duterte denied on Tuesday that Chinese businessman Michael Yang is his economic adviser.

“[He] cannot be because he’s a Chinese,” Duterte told reporters in Malacañang.

In his website http://www.opea.com.ph, Yang claimed to be Duterte’s economic adviser.

Yang, who owns the Davao City Los Amigos store, has been seen in several photos with the President, including during the chief executive’s visit to China in 2016.

Duterte earlier cleared Yang from illegal drug links during a speech at the Palace as he cited the close ties between the businessman and Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua.

He even said Yang joined the entourage of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang when the he visited the Philippines. /atm

PDEA: Shabu floods Metro Manila streets; prices drop
Romina Cabrera (The Philippine Star) - October 10, 2018 - 12:00am

Image

MANILA, Philippines — While prices of basic commodities have been rising, the cost of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu has dropped by more than a third as a ton of the drug that slipped into the country through magnetic lifters has “flooded” the streets of Metro Manila, according to the head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

PDEA director general Aaron Aquino, in an interview with “The Chiefs” on Cignal TV’s OneNews, said shabu prices are now at their lowest at P1,600 to P2,000 per gram in the National Capital Region.

Shabu prices in Metro Manila peaked at P6,800 per gram at the height of the government’s war against illegal drugs, but prices have gone down as the P6.8-shabu shipment that made its way to a warehouse in Cavite is now circulating on the streets.

“It just shows (that) there is too much supply. Prices have gone down since the discovery of the magnetic lifters. The shabu is now on the streets, being used,” Aquino said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Aquino said there are indications that the shabu shipment was downloaded only in Metro Manila as shabu prices in adjacent regions, Central Luzon (Region 3) and Calabarzon (Region 4-A), remain high.

The PDEA chief earlier said they were able to track down the shipment but operatives were only able to recover a kilogram of shabu, as well as plastic, aluminum foil and other wrappings used to hide the drug.

Aquino said the P6.8-billion shabu shipment should not be denied by the Bureau of Customs (BOC), whose leadership claimed that the empty magnetic lifters did not contain drugs as these allegedly tested negative during a swab test.

Aquino also hit BOC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña’s for not ordering a full-blown investigation on the shipment.

“Never did I hear the commissioner (warn) that he will sack his employees (or) he will conduct a full-blown investigation on (who facilitated entry of) these particular magnetic lifters, which got out of customs. I never heard that,” Aquino added.

Aquino said he has talked to President Duterte and cleared up their contradicting statements when the Chief Executive said the presence of shabu in the empty magnetic lifters was “pure speculation.”

The National Bureau of Investigation is probing three individuals who figured in the controversial shipment, namely former PDEA deputy director general for administration Ismael Fajardo, BOC intelligence officer Jimmy Guban and dismissed Senior Supt. Eduardo Acierto.

Aquino said they are waiting for the committee report of Congress before charges are filed against the suspects.
