America’s War On Drugs

For a long time, the truth about the war on drugs was only known by high-level politicians and “conspiracy theorists,” as many people couldn’t fathom the idea that the U.S. government, which claimed to be “against drugs,” was the very institution facilitating the drug trade. Nevertheless, over the years, more of the truth behind this propaganda campaign has come to light, allowing society to further understand the role the government plays in drug trafficking and how that relates to the prison system and other aspects of society.

Now, America’s war on drugs is finally starting to be addressed in the mainstream. Last year, the Netflix documentary 13th was released, which discussed the link the war on drugs has to the prison system and the mass incarceration of black people (you can read about this here). Last week, the History Channel released a four-part docu-series titled America’s War on Drugs, highlighting some of the key elements of this propaganda campaign.

DILG strips governor, 23 mayors of power over police for alleged drug links
By: Jhoanna Ballaran - Reporter / @JhoannaBINQINQUIRER.net / 03:02 PM November 09, 2017

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has removed the power of a governor and 23 other mayors over the police in their respective areas for their alleged links to illegal drugs.

In a set of resolutions dated October 30 and released to the media on Thursday, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) officer-in-charge (OIC) Undersecretary Catalino Cuy ordered the withdrawal of deputation to the following officials:

Zamboanga del Sur Governor Antonio Cerilles;
Sinacaban, Misamis Oriental Mayor Crisinciano Mahilac;
Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental Mayor Michael Gutierrez;
Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental Mayor Donjie Animas;
Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental Mayor Jason Almonte;
Concepcion , Misamis Occidental Mayor Juanidy Viña;
Calamba, Misamis Occidental Mayor Ezel Villanueva;
Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte Mayor Ferdinand Aguinaldo;
Concepcion, Tarlac Mayor Andres Lacson
Angeles, Pampanga Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan;
Subic, Zambales Mayor Jefferson Khonghun;
Camiling, Tarlac Mayor Erlon Agustin;
Lemery, Batangas Mayor Eulalio M. Alilio;
Teresa, Rizal Mayor Raul Palino;
Tanauan City, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili;
Rodriguez, Rizal Mayor Cecilio Hernandez;
San Pablo City, Laguna Mayor Loreto Amante;
Ronda, Cebu Mayor Mariano Blanco;
Santo Niño, South Cotabato Mayor Pablo Matinong Jr.;
Libungan, North Cotabato Mayor Christopher Cuan;
Banga, South Cotabato Mayor Albert Palencia;
Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur Mayor Leonida Angcap;
El Nido, Palawan Mayor Niever Cabunalda-Rosento; and
Bataraza, Palawan Mayor Abraham Ibba

“The exercise of the duties, obligations, powers, and prerogatives vested unto the foregoing local chief executives as Napolcom deputy under Section 51 (b) of RA 6975 as amended are hereby suspended accordingly,” the resolutions stated.

Cuy told INQUIRER.net that the officials could no longer give orders to their respective police forces and would no longer be entitled to security detail.

He said the resolutions were based on the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) list of officials tagged as “narcopoliticians.”

“The list was only forwarded to us by the PDEA, wala kaming dinagdag (we did not add anyone),” Cuy said.

The resolutions said that the involvement of a local chief executive in illegal drug activities is contrary to President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-illegal drug campaign and “constitutes an act inimical to national security.” /jpv

PDEA nabs Colombian 'swallower' of illegal drugs
Published November 14, 2017 5:24am

A male Colombian national, identified by authorities as a "swallower" of illegal drugs, was arrested by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) agents, according to a report on "Unang Balita."

After spending twenty-four hours in the hospital, alleged drug courier Alberto Pedraza Quijano was arrested after he expelled from his body, 79 pieces of elongated rubber pellets containing cocaine.

Quijano was identified by PDEA operatives as a swallower or a drug courier who swallows or hides illegal drugs inside his body as a means to smuggle contraband items.

According to the PDEA, the pellets contained 1.185 kilograms of cocaine worth about P8.89 million.

Quijano was arrested at the NAIA Terminal 3 last November 12 after disembarking from a flight that came from Dubai.

Local officials were informed of the attempt to smuggle cocaine through the intelligence report from the US Homeland Security, which conducted an investigation.

Ismael Fajardo, PDEA Director III, said the Colombian is a frequent flier and that he was not arrested immediately because he was wearing an ID card that showed he was member of a foundation.

Officials found that this was Quijano's third trip to the Philippines, so they suspect that this was the third time he smuggled illegal drugs into the country.

It is also possible, the officials added, that he is part of an international drug syndicate.

They are currently verifying information that Quijano was imprisoned in the United States due to drugs-related charges.

Meanwhile, the admitted the crime he committed and that he was involved in the illegal drug trade for the money.

Authorities are conducting an investigation to identify Quijano's contact in the country who only gets in touch with him upon his arrival at the airport to give him instructions.

They also plan to do a forensic examination of Quijano's cellphone. — BAP, GMA News
