Ex-ConCom spokesman seeks Senate seat
(philstar.com) - October 16, 2018 - 10:15am

MANILA, Philippines — The spokesman of the Consultative Committee for President Rodrigo Duterte's bid to shift to federalism said on Tuesday that he would be seeking a seat at the Senate.

Ding Generoso filed his certificate of candidacy under the Katipunan Ng Kamalayang Kayumanggi.

He said, in a statement, that while his future statements would no longer be related to the ConCom, he will continue to talk about “the draft Federal Constitution, the cause of federalism and system change.”

— Rosette Adel (@rosette_adel) October 16, 2018
“We are making the 2019 elections a platform to advance federalism, system change, and the Puno draft constitution,” Generoso said in a statement.

He added that he and his political party will focus on the shift to federalism in their campaign.

“We are bringing the Puno draft federal constitution to the polls in line with what the president said in his [State of Nation Address]—that he is confident that ‘the people will stand behind us when we bring the draft constitution to them,” Generoso also said.

The shift to federalism is central to the Duterte administration’s agenda.

The Concom’s draft Charter was submitted to Duterte last July.

Jinggoy Estrada joins Senate race anew
(philstar.com) - October 16, 2018 - 11:46am

MANILA, Philippines — Former Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has declared his candidacy to reclaim his Senate seat in next year's mid-term elections.

He submitted his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday at the main office of the Commission on Elections, together with former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada.

Estrada was released on bail in September last year after being detained for more than three years over his alleged role in the pork barrel scam.

In 2001, the former senator was jailed for plunder and graft charges and was released in 2003. He immediately ran for Senate in 2004. He was acquitted in 2007 and ran again in 2010, when he won.

He and former senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. were the top government officials charged in connection with the pork barrel scam.

Estrada placed sixth in the pre-senatorial election survey released by Pulse Asia last month.

Mar Roxas files COC for Senate comeback
(philstar.com) - October 16, 2018 - 9:15am

MANILA, Philippines — Former senator and Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas will seek a post in the Upper House in next year’s election.

But he said he has moved on since then.

"Well, unang-una ako naka-move on na ako. Kaya naging mahirap itong desisyon na ito ay dahil hindi basta-bastang parang patuloy lang. Ito yung gawain ko kahapon, ito yung gawain ko itong lingong, ito yung gagawin ko next week. E talagang lumabas na ako ng arena," he said.

He added that he had difficulty in deciding if he would return in the arena of public service.

Roxas placed in the 11-17 bracket in the pre-senatorial election survey released by Pulse Asia last month.

He served in the Senate from 2004 to 2010.

Before ending his speech he repeated what he said on Monday when he announced his bid to run: "I have no quit in me..."

"... and I'm not going to quit on our country," he said.

Chel Diokno, son of Martial Law opposition leader, files COC at same time as dictator's daughter
(philstar.com) - October 15, 2018 - 12:32pm

MANILA, Philippines — Human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno on Tuesday made official his bid for a Senate seat.

The son of the late Sen. Jose “Pepe” Diokno is one of the candidates of the erstwhile ruling Liberal Party for the May 2019 elections.

As a human rights lawyer, Diokno has condemned, many times, the thousands of killings under administration’s deadly war on drugs.

The chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group and founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law filed a petition against the drug war before the Supreme Court.

Son of Martial Law victim files at same time as dictator's daughter

Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, daughter of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, also filed her certificate of candidacy on Tuesday, the same time as Diokno, whose father was detained during the Martial Law period.

Asked by reporters about her thoughts on the younger Diokno, Imee said she doesn’t know him.

“I didn’t recognize him. I’m sorry I have poor eyesight,” Imee said of Diokno in Filipino.

“I have been in the province for a long time that’s why I don’t know those popular personalities.”

Diokno is the founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law, which highlights human rights and legal aid in its law program.

He sits as the chairperson of the Free Legal Assistance Group that has recently filed a petition before the Supreme Court asking it to declare President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs as unconstitutional.

Last year, Duterte, an ally of the Marcos family, granted the political clan’s longstanding wish to bury the late dictator’s remains at the Libingan in a surprise ceremony. — Gaea Katreena Cabico and Ian Nicolas Cigaral

Late dictator’s daughter Imee Marcos seeks Senate seat
(philstar.com) - October 12, 2018 - 10:41am

MANILA, Philippines — Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, daughter of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, will run for senator next year.

She filed her certificate of candidacy on Tuesday and was accompanied by her children and brother Bongbong.

Imee first hinted at her bid to run last February 24 during Baguio City’s 23rd Panagbenga Festival.

She said it has become evident that their generation has to take over the Marcos "legacy."

The Marcos patriarch, whose presidency was tainted by human rights abuses and massive corruption, was ousted in a 1986 "People Power" revolution.

Despite the death of the strongman while in exile in Hawaii in 1989, his family has been making a political comeback with his widow, Imelda, and their children getting elected to office.

Imee placed in the 7-11 bracket in the pre-senatorial election survey released by Pulse Asia last month. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral

Enrile comes out of retirement for Senate return
Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - October 16, 2018 - 3:18pm

MANILA, Philippines — Two years after announcing his retirement from public service, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile will seek a comeback in the Senate.

The 94-year-old veteran lawmaker filed his certificate of candidacy through his lawyer Joseph Sagandoy on Tuesday afternoon.

In August 2015, the Supreme Court allowed Enrile to post bail for P1.45 million. He is facing plunder and graft charges for his alleged involvement in the multi-million peso pork barrel scam.

In his bail petition, Enrile asked the court to consider his advanced age and voluntary surrender. A week after posting bail, the former senator returned to work at the Senate.

He announced his retirement in June 2016 during a privilege speech.

Prior to being a senator, Enrile served as acting Secretary of Finance from 1966 to 1968, Secretary of Justice from 1968 to 1970, and Minister of National Defense from 1972 to 1986.
