Erin Tañada says strong opposition needed in the Senate
Bordadora, Norman

Former Senator Wigberto Tañada raises the hand of his son, Lorenzo 'Erin' Tañada III, who filed his certificate of candidacy for senator at the Comelec main office in Manila on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. Tañada is running under the banner of the Liberal Party. Danny Pata

The country needs a strong opposition in the Senate, former Quezon Representative Lorenzo "Erin" Tañada III said after filing his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday.

“Kasi lahat ng institusyon po ngayon ay hinahamon po ng kasalukuyang administrasyon, nakita ko po ‘yan sa ating Korte Suprema at ibang institusyon natin,” Tañada said.

Tañada expressed confidence that opposition candidates would get support from the public.

“Tingin po namin there’s still enough time, handa na pong makinig ang taong bayan,” Tañada said.

Tañada said he would push for the passage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill if he wins the 2019 national election.

“Nandiyan po ang matagal ko nang pinalalaban na Freedom of Information bill. Mula 1988 eh hindi rin po ginagalaw ng ating mga senador at congressman. Ito’y importante upang labanan po ang korapsyon sa ating bansa,” Tañada told reporters.

Tañada even praised Pasig City as it was able to pass its own version of the FOI bill under the Ordinance No. 37, which allows the disclosure of the city’s public documents.

“Natutuwa po ako na ang lungsod ng Pasig ay nauna na at pinasa ang sarili nilang Freedom of Information. Nakakahiya po ang ating mga national leaders kung saan eh itong usapin ay pinapabayaang matulog ng ganyan. ‘Yan po ay isa sa ipaglalaban natin,” he said. —NB, GMA News

Roque makes senatorial bid official
Rosette Adel (philstar.com) - October 17, 2018 - 11:11am

MANILA, Philippines — Party-list representative turned presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Wednesday officially filed his certificate of candidacy for senator.

Roque formalized his Senate bid days after announcing he would run as representative of the Luntiang Pilipinas party.

Former presidential spokesman Harry Roque files his COC. Roque earlier declined to disclose the post he’s running for, but later said he’s eyeing for a seat in the Senate. @PhilstarNews pic.twitter.com/dxBMml3p4I

— Ian Nicolas Cigaral (@ipcigaral) October 17, 2018
Last week, Roque was replaced by chief legal presidential counsel Salvador Panelo in his Palace post. The former solon earlier repeatedly expressed intention to run for senator.

He, however, said his decision to run in the 2019 midterm elections will depend on his discussion with President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte earlier asked Roque to reconsider his decision and discouraged him to run, citing that he is not favored by the military.

The president instead offered Roque the press secretary post, a post he wanted to revive.

Sonny Angara, Senate’s tax man, seeks second term
(philstar.com) - October 17, 2018 - 10:14am

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara on Wednesday filed his certificate of candidacy as the lone senatorial candidate of Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino.

Reelectionist senator Sonny Angara said senators are not keen on passing TRABAHO bill now. The measure seeks to reduce corporate income tax rate and rationalize investment tax incentives. @PhilstarNews pic.twitter.com/6XeUZMUcK0

The senator is seeking re-election at a time of high inflation that has, government economists say, unfairly been attributed to the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law that he shepherded through the Senate as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

The committee will also handle a second tax reform package, dubbed TRAIN 2, which aims to rationalize fiscal incentives.

The bill will likely have a more difficult time through the legislative mill because of public reaction to TRAIN 1.

Angara has expressed support for the Rice Tariffication bill, which aims to remove limits on how much rice can be imported into the Philippines but will impose tariffs on those imports to keep rice from flooding the market and edging out locally grown rice.

Angara’s committee has been working with the Agriculture and Food, and Finance committees on that bill

Angara is also chairman of the Committee on Education, Culture, and Sports as well as the Committee on Local Government.

Ang importanteng trabaho ng Senado:

1. Bantayan ang kaban ng bayan.
2. Tutulan ang magastos na pamahalaan at paglustay sa pera ng mamamayan.
3. Suriin ang trabaho ng gobyerno: labanan maling asal & gawa.
4. Isulong ang progresibong agenda: tutok sa ilalim.

ANG TAMA, 'NILALABAN.

— florin hilbay (@fthilbay) October 16, 2018
As solicitor general, Hilbay served as the Philippines’ main agent in the arbitration filed against China in 2013.

He was tasked to convince the Hague-based tribunal that it has jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to hear the maritime dispute. He was also in charge of introducing the country’s 15 arguments against Beijing’s claims. – Patricia Lourdes Viray
