The International Boxing Association (AIBA) on Tuesday denied the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines’s request for lightweight boxer Charly Suarez to be accorded an invitation to the London Olympics, leaving Mark Anthony Barriga as the lone Filipino fighter in the Games.

In an email to ABAP president Ricky Vargas, AIBA executive director Ho Kim said: “After numerous discussions with IOC, the quota in the weight category which you requested was returned to AIBA since IOC could not find a suitable place in the Tripartite Selection. Therefore, following the Olympic Qualifying Guidelines approved by the IOC Executive Board, the next Best Boxer from the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships is supposed to be selected.”

“Following the Competition Protocol list, we regrettably found out that your boxer does not meet the qualification to be the next Best Boxer in your continent. We would like to truly express our regret to inform you on such matter,” said Kim.

The ABAP had earlier written a formal request to AIBA president Ching Kuo-Wu to consider Suarez based on his performance as a finalist in the Asian Qualifying Tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan, where he lost an unpopular decision to China’s Qiang Liu.

Suarez also turned in spectacular results as a boxer for the Mumbai Fighters of India in the AIBA-organized World Series of Boxing (WSB).

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao also expressed his support for the request in a personal letter to Wu as did Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco Jr.

This leaves Barriga as the lone Filipino bet in the boxing competitions. He fights in the light flyweight category (49 Kg.), the same weight class which won an Olympic silver (Mansueto Velasco Jr., Atlanta ‘96) and bronze (Roel Velasco, Barcelona, ‘92) for the Philippines.

Bronze medalist Velasco will act as Barriga’s coach in London.

Nigeria takes final Olympic basketball spot

Ike Diogu scored 25 points as Nigeria earned the final men’s basketball spot at the London Olympics with an 88-73 victory over the Dominican Republic on Sunday.

“I’m very happy. We did what had to be done,” Diogu said. “We knew we were going to face teams that are heavyweights, and we did what we needed to do — win.”

Yack Martinez led the Dominican Republic with 16 points.

Russia and Lithuania also qualified with semifinals victories Saturday.

In London, Lithuania and Nigeria will join the United States, Tunisia, France and Argentina in Group A. Russia, China, Britain, Brazil, Australia and Spain are in Group B.

Peping Cojuangco: We will not be humiliated in Olympics

PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee chief Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. won’t commit a medal of any color in the London Olympics, but said he’s sure the 11 Filipino Olympians will gamely try to outdo themselves.

“The way I look at things, we will not be humiliated,” said Cojuangco, noting that BMX rider Daniel Caluag, archers Mark Javier and Rachel Cabral and long jumper Marestella Torres could pull off surprises.

“I’m not saying we could win a medal,” he added. “It’s hard to say that because we don’t know what kind of opposition we’ll be facing. But (BMX and archery) could give us a good showing. Same with Marestella if she’s in good shape.”

Caluag, a Filipino-American, has been ranked No.1 four times in the United States; Torres topped the continent in her discipline in 2009, while Javier and Cabral have been showing splendid form since archery hired South Korean coach Chun Jae-hun, a gold medalist in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

The Philippines has failed to nail a medal since 1996, when boxer Mansueto Velasco Jr. seized a silver in the Atlanta Games.

Boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, skeet shooter Brian Rosario and judoka Tomohiko Hoshina are the other long-shot bets for medal in the July 27 to Aug. 12 global meet.

Swimmer Jessie Khing Lacuna and Jasmine Alkhaldi, steeplechaser Rene Herrera, Barriga, Diaz, Rosario and Torres are now deep into the pregames training camp in the British capital.

Philippine chef de mission Manny Lopez has been lobbying for the inclusion of Javier and Cabral in the camp while Hoshina and Caluag have been practicing outside the training camp organized by the London Olympic Committee.

Injuries hurt US NBA stars dreams of gold

Injuries to Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose and Chris Bosh have left the US Olympic team of NBA stars hurting as they gather to prepare to defend gold at the London Olympics.

The idea was to blend the best of talent from the 2008 Olympic champion and 2010 world champion squads into a formidable favored side for London, but injury setbacks have taken away two star big men in Howard and Bosh.

"We've taken four bullets," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said. "It will now be a testimony to the infrastructure we put in with the national team roster.

"I feel very confident about our roster going forward. Adversity gives people opportunity, and guess what -- it's going to open up a couple of roster positions."

Six players have been lost from the original set of finalists, leaving 16 others to fill 12 Olympic spots and a July 7 deadline, two days after the US training camp opens, for US coach Mike Krzyzewski to name a final roster.

"It is obvious why we have built a pool of players over the last seven years to take care of situations like these," Krzyzewski said. "This opens up opportunities for other players in the pool to show their talents."

Wade and Bosh helped lead the Miami Heat to the NBA title last month but Wade will require knee surgery. Doctors told Bosh not to play in the Olympics because he could aggravate an abdominal strain that sidelined him during the playoffs.

Orlando's Howard suffered a back injury during the season and Rose, last year's NBA Most Valuable Player, tore a left knee ligament in Chicago's first playoff game. Chauncey Billups of the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge are also out with injuries.

The Americans remain a formidable lineup led by LeBron James of the Heat, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant plus Russell Westbrook and James Harden of NBA Finals runner-up Oklahoma City.

But New York's Tyson Chandler and Minnesota's Kevin Love are the top big men remaining after the injuries.

Other US candidates include New York's Carmelo Anthony, Brooklyn's Deron Williams, Lamar Odom of Dallas, new NBA Draft top pick Anthony Davis and Chris Paul and Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The United States looks for a fifth title in six tries since NBA talent debuted with the 1992 US "Dream Team" at Barcelona.

But NBA commissioner David Stern says the league needs to look at having the Olympics be an under-23 event with some exceptions, a nod to owners who object to injury risks to their superstar players, not just on the US side.

"(Repeating) won't be easy because the tournament will be tough," Paul said. "A lot of teams can fight for a medal, but the USA are a legitimate contender for winning the gold."

Spain lost in the Beijing Olympic final but will feature Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka, the NBA's top shot blocker each of the past two seasons, and a host of NBA talent, including 2.13m Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol.

"My expectations are high," Gasol said. "My teammates and I will fight for the gold medal. I think that we can win the tournament. We have a lot of talent and everyone will be very motivated to give it their all on the court.

"Winning a gold medal at the Olympics would be a huge satisfaction. It would be incredible for Spain.

"We're afraid of no one."

France, which lost to the Americans in the 2000 Olympic final, has such NBA talent as guard Tony Parker and center Joakim Noah.

"Playing in London will be a dream come true," Noah said. "We will fight for a medal."

France also pushed Spain in last year's EuroBasket final in Lithuania.

"It would be a huge mistake for everyone to consider USA and Spain as the only contenders for the gold medal," Gasol said.

American women have won six of the past seven hoops gold medals, settling for bronze in 1992 but winning the past four titles in a row, the past three by beating Australia in the final. Another US-Aussie final is expected in London.

Olympians Leave For London Today
July 18, 2012, 9:10pm

Fresh from overseas training, archers Mark Javier and Rachel Anne Cabral and Fil-Japanese Judoka Tomohiko Hoshina leave tonight for Hong Kong en route to London to join eight other teammates seeing action in the 30th Olympic Games.

Javier, Cabral and Hoshina comprised the last group of Filipino athletes to take off for an 18-hour flight to the British capital, more than a week before the world’s biggest sporting spectacle opens with a glitzy welcome party on July 27.

They came back the other day after wrapping up the final phase of their respective buildups, with Javier and Cabral going through a 10-day training in South Korea under Korean coach Chung Jae Yun and Hoshina doing his own in Tokyo under Japanese mentor Yasuhiro Sato.

Philippine team chef de mission Manny Lopez, who left on Tuesday evening, will meet Javier and Co. at the Heathtrow airport and accompany them to the high-rise, vast Olympic Village, home to more than 16,000 athletes and officials from 204 nations for the next three weeks.

Any day now, long jumper Marestella Torres, long distance runner Rene Herrera, shooter Brian Rosario, boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jessie Khing Lacuna will also check in one of the 2,818 apartments across 11 residential blocks inside the 65-acre Olympic Village in east London.

Covering 2.5 square kilometres in east London, the Olympic Park was once industrial wasteland but has been transformed over the last few years into a green space that both visitors to the Games and local residents can enjoy after this summer.
