Azkals end ’16 ranked 120th

NOTWITHSTANDING its “disappointing” early exit in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November, the Philippine men’s national football team remained the top team in the region, placing 120th in the world rankings at the end of Year 2016.

Saw their string of three consecutive semifinal appearances in the high-profile regional biennial meet come to an end when they placed third in their group in the preliminary stage in games held here, the Philippine Azkals kept their hold as the top-ranked Southeast Asian team in FIFA, six rungs higher than Suzuki Cup repeat champion Thailand, which finished the year at 126.

The 120th finish was three points down from the 117 rank the Azkals got in November but a jump from their 135th placing at the start of 2016.

The team averaged a 126th ranking for the whole of last year and placed highest at 115 in the month of May.

Coming after the Philippines and Thailand is Vietnam at third at 134 followed by Myanmar (159) and Malaysia (161) in fourth and fifth, respectively.

The rest of the Southeast Asian teams has Singapore (165) at sixth, Laos (167) at seventh, Indonesia (171) at eighth, Cambodia (173) at ninth, Brunei (190) at 10th and Timor-Leste (191) at 11th.

Iran remains the top Asian team at 29 and Argentina the top-ranked team in the world.
