Great game by Brazil! Very impressed with their solid defense for which they were never known for. But Neymar finally orchestrated the winning moments with a goal and an assist to overcome the gritty challenge of the Mexicans.

Belgium however provided the most dramatic finish in the tournament so far by becoming the first team to come back from a 0-2 deficit. Japan exposed their vulnerability and toughness at the same time. Belgium, along with France, consist of the most impressive roster of forwards, midfields, defenders and goalkeepers. Courtouis, who is currently one of the best goalies, conceded two goals early on before his team rallied to win in the last seconds, or probably the last shot before the dreaded penalties. Thiat sets up an exciting quarter finals encounter with Brazil whom i slightly favor owing to their much better defense and ability to create attacking opportunities. This a must see. Either of this two could win the the golden trophy.

What a heart breaker for Japan!! After leading 2-0 with about 20 minutes to go, Belgium finally woke up and their comeback started to "steal" away Japan's victory!! That 3-2 victory by Belgium is for the record books.. I think it was the 2nd most come from behind victory in World Cup history.

As what most analysts figured, it was a very entertaining Brazil-Mexico game. Much kudos to the Mexican squad as they have shown they can play with the very best in the world. Germany saw that first hand, and Brazil got a taste of that in the 2012 Olympic Gold medal finals. But the Seleção's would not be denied this time! Brazilian defenders were unpenetrable against the onslaught of the Mexican attack and came away with a quarter finals match up with Belgium!!! A MUST WATCH GAME!!

What the World Cup is telling us so far;

- The dream of seeing either Messi or Ronaldo lifting the trophy will never happen. This is probably Ronaldo’s last WC Tournament because he’s already 33 years old. By 2022, he’s turned 37 and he’s most certainly old or retired by that time. Messi, at 31, will be 35. Like boxing, that is considered old and past his prime in soccer. Argentina are stacked with fine, individual players signed in the most popular clubs in Spanish, French and English Premiere League. But this is a fine example of great players not playing up to their potential as a team. They have poor tactical coordination that the likes of unheralded Sweden and team with lesser stars like Croatia are cohesively showing.

- Powerhouse Italy and Netherlands’ absence is one thing we’re not used to seeing. It shows that the other European teams are improving. Though they have come much farther than this in previous tounaments, South Korea and most notably, Japan have shown that their level of play is constantly improving as well. Against Germany and Belgium, they’ve won our hearts with their gallant efforts.

- Among the remaining 8 teams in the quarter finals, half of those were previous winners. Evenly divided by South Americans ( Uruguay and Brazil) and Europeans ( England and France). The host team Russia have brushed off consistent losses in Friendly Games and are enjoying a great run at the moment. Only a few have predicted they would get this far.

- Germany have continued the curse of past World Cup winners except Brazil in 2006 after winning it in 2002. France won the WC in 1998 but got eliminated in the group stage in 2002 without scoring a single goal. Italy won in 2006, bumped off early in 2010. Spain won in 2010, didn’t get past the group stage in 2014. Germany did it in 2014, made their exit in the group stage this year.

- Brazil have finally overtaken Germany for most goals scored (227) in all WC tournaments.

- Belgium made history by becoming the first team to overcome a 0-2 deficit in the knockout stages.

- Neymar puts himself in no. 3 position, after the great Romaldo (62) and Pele (77), with 57 goals scored for Brazil national team.

- As of today, Here are the strong contenders for the Golden Boot;
Harry Kane ( ENGLAND) - 6 goals
Romelu Lukaku ( BELGIUM) - 4 goals
Artem Dzyuva ( RUSSIA) - 3 goals
Denis Cheryshev ( RUSSIA) - 3 goals
Kylan Mbappe ( FRANCE) - 3 goals
Edinson Cavani ( URUGUAY) - 3 goals

* Cristiano Ronaldo (4 goals) and Diego Costa (3) are already out in the quarter finals
