Pacquiao confident of passing initial scales check

HOLLYWOOD—Manny Pacquiao gets a chance to validate his declaration that he has his weight in check when he undergoes an initial mandatory test at the scales on Saturday.
Pacquiao donned a sweat shirt for the first time when he stepped up his training at the Wild Card gym Thursday for his World Boxing Council super featherweight championship bout against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez.
“Sinubukan ko lang (I just tried it on),” said Pacquiao as drops of perspiration trickled out from the pores on his well-chiseled body and dripped onto the canvas after a punishing non-stop, two-hour workout.
“Yan ang sabaw (There’s the soup),” Pacquiao said in jest. “As far as I’m concerned, weight is no longer an issue. I still eat what I want and make up for it with hard training.”
Pacquiao’s battle with the scales has been an issue since his last bout —a unanimous decision victory over Marco Antonio Barrera—when he struggled to make the weight.
Conflicting records have him weighing anywhere between 133 and 136 pounds, depending on who was talking.
Saturday’s weigh-in, mandated by the WBC to make sure that no boxer is more than five percent over the super featherweight limit of 130 lb a week before fight night, is expected to set the record straight.
Pacquiao is confident of passing the test, even telling journalists that he has not cut down much on his food intake because he burns it up during training.
This was confirmed by Filipino trainer Nonoy Neri, who doubles as kitchen supervisor when Pacquiao holds training camp.
Neri said Pacquiao continues to feast on his favorites: Scrambled eggs, fried fish, sweet and sour pampano or isdang bato (fish), chicken tinola (stewed chicken), ginisang ampalaya and lots of fruits.
But Neri said he has limited serving beef nilaga and has cut down on Pacquiao’s rice intake this week in preparation for the weigh-in, where both boxers are not supposed to weigh more than 137 lb.
This early, Pacquiao is well within the range. He was said to have checked in at 133 lb last week.
And, as of Thursday, bosom buddy and trainer Buboy Fernandez believes he was at the 132 lb level already—well under where he should be eight days left before the March 15 rematch against Marquez at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, however, is insistent on hitting the 130 mark even before heading for Las Vegas, 480 kilometers from here, on Monday.
“Kaya ibinubuhos ko sa training (That’s why I’m training hard),” said Pacquiao, who reported for training on Jan. 14 at about 144 lb. “Para walang problema (So there won’t be any problem.”
Marquez began high-altitude training in Toluca, Mexico, before Christmas and now reportedly weighs 132 lb.
The first bout between the two ended in a draw in 2004 despite three first round knockdowns suffered by Marquez.
“My only wish is for him (Marquez) to fight me toe-to-toe,” said Pacquiao. “I want to make Filipinos and fight fans happy.”
Pacquiao himself was in a jovial mood Thursday after finding out that he got high grades, a flat 1, 1.25 and 1.50 in some of his Business Management courses at Notre Dame of Gen. Santos City.

High Calorie-Content is not better if you want to lose weight. Sweet n Sour sauce has high calories from its sweetness.
