I have this laptop of mine reformatted lately because it turns off a sudden. I'm suspecting that a virus is the culprit. I've reformatted the system from xp to Windows 7. I was successful in reformatting but still turns off automatically (still the same). Although the drive D was not changed.

Is it the hardwares that are failing? or Does it have a Virus?

P.S. My laptop has no battery anymore.

Check if the CPU fan is working well, most laptops will shutdown if the CPU fan fails...

Also check your power settings. They could be set to turn off or hibernate after a certain amount of time.

i had this problem several years back with my dell pc, it turned out to be a virus, tried to hijack my home page, i rolled it back to the time when I first recieve the PC, and it worked, I had the CD, but some of my documents, and settings where lost, but that's how it goes, I tried several anti virus software, so far Kapersky is doing a good job for me.

If reinstalling OS does not fix it, then this is hardware failure.

The motherboard would normally shut down all power if it detects overheating of the CPU.
So it could be overheating or the mobo detects overheating even when there is none.

Try to run hardware diagnostics on the hardware. Normally, the OEM will provide you with
a built in diagnostic software on the hdd or from a CD.

Chances are either the mobo, CPU and fans or any combination of the 3 needs to be replaced.
Considering the mobo and CPU are both expensive, you may just consider getting a new laptop.

You can reset all new Dell computers via two keys.
Turn on the computer, before Windows launch, hit the Control and F11 keys together. It will ask you if you want to restore your computer. Just press OK.

This is a way to restore your computer if you don't have the restore disk.

This will restore your computer to it's initial state when you bought it.

WARNING: Everything you put in your computer will be wiped out. This is meant to be last ditch effort to try and get your computer back when you first got it.

over heating..
normally turning off intervals are shortened each time.(not recommended doing this though).
open it check if fan is turning.
common fault on laptop is overheating due to lack of circulation but you can buy accessories to prevent this on happening.

A computer unexpected shutdown or restart is caused by many reasons:

1. Software
a. virus
b. OS instability/incompatibility (usually with recent additional installation of Hardware or software)
c. CMOS - improper settings( usually when overclocking- try using defaut settings)

2. Hardware
a. power supply - busted
b. Processor failure
c. Overheating ( fan - slow rpm, busted or dirty heatsink )
d. motherboard failure

* the list was based on my actual experience regarding shutdowns i know it isn't complete but i hope it helps

the fastest way to troubleshoot such is to have a working replacement of the particular suspedted hardware

for laptops overheating is common due to the compact design

try this http://www.fonerbooks.com/pcrepair.htm

Try booting with an Ubuntu linux live disc. If it does the same thing probably its a hardware problem not a virus.

It happened to me a few weeks ago. It turns out that the fans not working well.

Bro check the manual or dell website, I remember there is a Dell hardware diagnostic tool that you can use by booting through your Dell CDs. This will diagnose your computer for possible hardware failures. When you get an error code, write it down and search it from the net or from the Dell website.
