Blaze of Sorry

A slightly different show

Like the introduction of Pacquiao as a "congressional candidate"
wasn't tacky enough, one had to show a poster saying "Good-
night Darlene". No, this is not another Vote for Darlene thread,
this thread is about recapping the boxing event in San Antonio,
Texas. This is about what I've been dreading about - the mix-
ing of Politics into boxing. Because I know it would (and it did)
translate into the changing of exciting boxing shows into circus-
like atmosphere, the one you see in an election race. You saw
placards related to his congressional campaign instead fight-
related comments. I think it’s more fun to read fight remarks
in those placards than election campaign pitches, especially in
a boxing match. You saw tacky comments towards the incum-
bent Darlene Custodio as they would usually do when politicians
put down or mudsling each other. Am I the only one feeling the
show is changing here? I'm sorry but I was disappointed.

Pacquiao's performance

Then there is his performance, a far cry from the Pacquiao that
destroyed Morales in their 3rd fight. This is the first time Manny
is being featured as the main attraction, with no other star in the
main event but himself. It is a true test to find out his drawing
power, a test to find out if he can really fill arenas. And I think
it was a letdown. Don't get me wrong, I think it was a great win.
Knocking out your opponent is always described as a spectacular
win. But the people also have to remember that it more of a tune-
up because the quality of opponent in Solis is like Velasquez. First,
he had a smaller physique. He came in at 128.5 lbs. on the scales
(and probably not much in the ring because he looked the same).
He also didn’t use his right as often when Solis was open for it.
Solis is not suppose to last that long, not when his hands are down
like that oh so often (he was perfect for a right overhand). Pacquiao
said he was awkward but I think it was because he didn’t balance
him out with his right. If he threw enough right jabs and hooks,
he would have opened up for him. I’m sorry guys but the best
performance of that night was Christian Mijares. When it was
Pacquiao’s turn to come in, the audience was quiet and seemed
not as peppy. From his ring entrance all the way to the fight itself,
it was not on par with the loud and raucous crowd of Las Vegas.

Viloria’s peformance

It might be over for him. I have a feeling he will be taken off
the lineup underneath Pacquiao’s matches. His performance is
not convincing. He has to earn the praises if he wants to keep
his place. And his performance that night says it all. He may
have the world-class technique but his output isn’t (not on that
fight). He has to take it to his opponents, bring the fight to
them. Like Arum’s flags were not loud enough (Arum’s keeps
referring to this performance as a disappointment during the
press conference). Workrate is an important factor and his is
comparable to Penalosa’s. I’m sorry but that doesn’t cut it.

Singer’s performance

The lady singing the US national anthem went out of tune :)
Was she bothered about her tube falling off? She seemed to
readjust her tube outfit after that. Maybe that was her way of
redirecting us :), a way to get the focus out of her voice and
into her tube.

Miscues Galore

Like a contagious disease, the missteps spreads through
out the whole production. You have to care about this as
you would for the whole show is being watched in America.
You can't just care about the main event as the opponent
is an unknown, you have to care for the whole show. The
misstatement was even evident on Micheal Buffer himself
who messed up his WBC announcement. There's a string
of foul-ups in that show. There was the abrupt cutting off
of Solis' ring entrance, the announcer's fighter introduction,
the blunder in singing the national anthem, audio problems
right in the middle of Pacquiao's interview. I would be hid-
ing my face if I'm with the production crew that night.

Its time to celebrate, and celebrate we should. Mediamen
and fans have been singing their praises for a long time. I,
for one, have done my share of writing articles that magnify
Manny's glorious wins. But for those who wants balance in
their articles, this fight is probably a good choice to air out
what should be or should not be in the whole picture that
is a great win in the Alamodome, Texas.

I don't know... I'd have to say it was worth it if I paid for it (which I didn't).

The Viloria-Sosa fight was competitive. Mijares-Arce, although one-sided, was still compelling.

Pacquiao fought an awkward fight, but I attribute that more to Solis' height and movement.

All in all, I think I was a PPV-worthy card. I don't think those who saw the fight live were underwhelmed, but let's wait for their reactions na lang.

the mention of "congressional candidate" was not the first time that a spiel like that happened in a boxing match.

i remembered michael buffer mentioned "mayoral candidate" (or something like that) when introducing Vitali Klitschko who was then running for mayor of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine.

Well, he lost the elections though!
I hope manny will not win the electoral contest... he's got a lot more avenues to help his kababayan even if he is not congressman.

Cybiryan you worry to much about something you have no control of . The production team of TR where all americans no pinoys where working
They where simply filming the event they don't give a crap about the politics . The fans put out the banners and also paid a lot of money to watch the fight and making fun of Pacmans ambitions. The fans are not even voters . I suggest you don't take life to seriouse its making you so negative . Enjoy the moment , relax lets play some golf . Let Pacman fans
celebrate a little and quit being so negative its bad for the heart ?????

good post cy.. but i have to disagree in some areas. Style makes fights and having an awkward opponent makes a good fighter into a mediocare one.

Solis is the much bigger and taller fighter and keeps on moving backwards and laterally throwing Pac off his rhythm. He is not like Morales who stands toe to toe with Pac so the end results differ with Solis.

But i gotta agree politics and boxing should not be mixed in the same potion.

What, you think I will just jump up and down on EVERY Pacquiao fight?

Get used to it, he's being criticized here here if he deserves to
be. And we, well-balanced commentators, welcome these re-
marks. Even the fight coverage was bad ... audio diffulties right
in the middle of Pacquiao's interview. I'm a Pacquiao fan but not
a fanatic.

Oh Vitali lost that race :) He would prolly make a better
candidate. Wasn't he like a doctor or sumtin. Anyway,
allowed or not, I think its tacky to bring in another agenda.
The people came in to watch a boxing match. Inappropriate
use of popularity .. well for me anyways.

Sheesh .. I want to watch it, period :)

Don't think too much, just watch the main event, boxing. MP didn't use his right too much as Solis proved to be like his opponents in the past, easy to hit with just one hand ...

Cybiryan:

I agree with you on some of what you said, but disagree on more. I agree with you that the promotion of the fight SUCKED. From the singers, to the audio problems, and the general promotion of the fight. A lot of people didnt' even know Manny was fighting last night in the USA.

Disagree on your point about no stars on the card. Jorge Arce is a Mexican boxing fan star for sure. Disagree about Manny's performance. Manny fought an undefeated fighter who was a little awkward, and had decent slipping ability. Manny probably got a little too relaxed early, fought to the level of his competition. When Manny got cut, he got pissed and took care of business.

The crowd wasn't as animated when Pacquiao came into the ring because it was MOSTLY Mexican fans in there to see Arce, and to see their Solis try to pull of an upset and beat Manny. San Antonio is just a few hours drive from the Mexican border. I used to live there, and it's population is mostly Mexican, so no big surprise that the crowd wasn't as peppy when Pac came in.

AGREE BIG TIME WITH YOU on the singers. I mean come on Bob Arum, research your singers some. I as an American was disgusted by that butcher job on the American National Anthem..
