John Whisler: Pacquiao, Arum provided big boost for local boxing

Web Posted: 04/21/2007 08:43 PM CDT
San Antonio Express-News

Thanks to Manny Pacquiao, Jorge Arce and a slender southpaw, a star-in-the-making named Cristian Mijares, big-time boxing is back in San Antonio.

For the past year or so, many of us had worried out loud that the sport was down for the count here.

That this once-great fight town, like a boxer who didn't know when to quit, had become a has-been doomed to reliving its past glories and brushes with fame.

The last major fight —Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera — was just four years ago. But to the impatient fight fan, it seemed more like 44.

And, yes, Evander Holyfield, one of the sport's all-time greats, headlined a card at the Alamodome in November. But despite a terrific undercard bout between two local fighters that stole the show, the event was a box-office bust.

"The Comeback Continues" became "The Disaster in the Dome."

San Antonio, it seemed, had a bad case of the boxing blues.

But April 14 changed all of that. Why, then, did this card succeed where so many others had failed?

Texas promoter Lester Bedford says the answer is simple. The problem, he maintains, wasn't that fight fans had lost interest.

"If you give them something worth seeing, they'll show up," said Bedford, the marketing and site coordinator for the April 14 dome card. "They want quality fights."

Evidently, at least 14,793 people agree with him. That's how many fans turned out to see Pacquiao, Arce and Julio César Chávez Jr. put on a show at the Alamodome.

Just how successful was it?

The live gate that night of just below $1.3 million made it San Antonio's second-largest boxing event and third-largest in Texas boxing history.

Only the 1993 Julio Cesar Chavez-Pernell Whitaker blockbuster at the Alamodome (60,000 fans, $6.8 million gate) and the 1998 Oscar De La Hoya-Patrick Charpentier clash at the Sun Bowl in El Paso (45,368, $2.8 million) did better.

Not bad for a boxing town that supposedly had seen its better days.

(Note that two of the top three boxing events in Texas took place at the Alamodome).

In passing out the praise, you have to start at the top, with Top Rank.

The Las Vegas-based promotional company put together a card that wasn't the standard pay-per-view fare. Instead of an aging star fighting another over-the-hill has-been, or a bunch of no-names no one's ever heard of — or cares about — fighting each other, we had big stars, recognizable names and competitive fights from top to bottom.

Credit Bob Arum, Top Rank's chairman, for recognizing that fans won't show up just because of a promoter's hype, and for taking a risk by not settling for the "easy money" of a Las Vegas casino.

And credit Bedford for another superb marketing effort.

Both were sorely missed in November for the Holyfield card — which promised so much but delivered so little. The promoter, Murad Muhammad, still hasn't paid all of his bills.

Unlike that fiasco, this was a fight card that was done right by professionals who have done it right for a long time.

"We were delighted, with the crowd and the reception," Arum said. "Everything was great."

"Boxing is alive and well in San Antonio," Bedford said.

Right now, it's pretty hard to argue with either one.
