London 2012 Olympic Boxing: The Favorites to Win Every Division

With the 2012 London Olympics set to begin, it's time to take a look at each boxing division to see who is the man - or woman - to beat. There are 13 different weight classes in the competition, including 10 on the men's side and three for the women in their Olympics debut.
Below, find the favorite to win each division in the London 2012 Olympic boxing tournament.

Men's Light Flyweight

China's Zou Shiming is the defending gold medalist from Beijing. His toughest competition is Jong Hoon Shin of South Korea, whom he defeated at the 2011 World Championships, and Paddy Barnes of Ireland, a bronze medalist in Beijing.

Men's Flyweight

Misha Aloyan of Russia is the man to beat at Flyweight, where he's the reigning World Champion. The UK's Andrew Selby lost to Aloyan in the finals there, and Team USA's Rau'shee Warren is making his third trip to the Olympics. He's in a tough division but is the most likely American to have a legitimate shot at taking home gold in London.

Men's Bantamweight

Lazaro Alvarez from Cuba is a force, winning the 2011 World Championships. He took out the division's number 1 ranked fighter, Tajikstan's Anvar Yunusov, in the process. England's Luke Campbell and Ireland's John Nevin are both threats here.

Men's Lightweight

There's no stronger favorite in any division than Vasyl Lomachenko from Ukraine. He won the Val Barker Cup at Beijing as the tournament's best fighter, and is a two-time World Champion. Yasniel Toledo of Cuba is very talented, and Domenico Valentino of Italy is deeply experienced.

Men's Light Welterweight

Brazil's Everton Lopes is the reigning World Champion. Denys Berincyhk of Ukraine narrowly lost to him in the finals of that tournament, while Cuba's Rosniel Iglesias is a veteran from Beijing. England's Thomas Stalker is actually the division's number 1 ranked fighter.

Men's Welterweight

The man at Welterweight is Ukrainian Taras Shelestyuk. He's the reigning 2011 World Champion, and defeated his rival, Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan, in the finals.

Men's Middleweight

Ukraine's Ievgen (Evhen) Khytrov is the reigning World Champion. He has a heads up win over Ryota Murata of Japan, although it was a close fight. Ireland's Darren O'Neill is a major player here as well.

Men's Light Heavyweight

Julio Cesar la Cruz of Cuba is the top dog at Light Heavyweight. He's the reigning World Champion, and he easily took out Egor Mekhonstev of Russia in the process. Aussie Damien Hooper could also medal here.

Men's Heavyweight

Oleksandr Usyk from Ukraine is the 2011 World Champion. He lost in Beijing to Italy's Clemente Russo, but has come into his own since then. Azerbaijan's Teymur Mammadov and China's Wang Xuanxuan are also fighters of note at Heavyweight.

Men's Super Heavyweight

Azerbaijani Magomedrasul Medzhidov is the reigning World Champion. He narrowly edged the athletic UK fighter Anthony Joshua, in that tournament. Robert Cammarelle is the gold medal winner from Beijing, while Cuba's Erislandy Savon has that famous last name that makes him so intriguing.

Will Philippine Olympic boxer Mark Anthony Barriga break the gold medal drought in the 2012 London Olympics? Will he even get a medal?

Kapit, bayan!

If there is proof that game-fixing is routinely practiced in Olympic boxing, look no further and watch the fight between Japan's Satoshi Shimizu and Azerbaijan's Magomed Abdulhamidov.

I hope this won't happen to our very own Mark Barriga. Also, I am hoping he knocks down—or better yet, knocks out—his opponents so possible game-fixing will not be a factor in our quest to get a medal.

Please read the article below:

Knockdowns are exceedingly rare in Olympic boxing. Japan's Satoshi Shimizu knocked down Azerbaijan's Magomed Abdulhamidov five times in the third and final round of their bantamweight bout yesterday. And yet, the judges scored the round in favor of the one who spent more time on the canvas than on his feet.

"I was shocked by the final scores. He fell down so many times," Shimizu said. "Why didn't I win? I don't understand."

After Abdulhamidov was awarded the 22-17 victory over Shimizu, the uproar began. Fans rained boos from the stands, and Japanese officials immediately lodged a protest. It was, by any account, the biggest competitive disgrace of the Olympics so far. And there's reason to ask if this was more than the usual Olympic boxing incompetence, but rather something more sinister.

Last September, BBC Newsnight presented evidence that Azerbaijan had paid millions of dollars in an international boxing organization, in return for a guarantee that two Azerbaijanis would win gold medals at these London Olympics. They found documents showing a $9 million bank transfer, funneled through Switzerland, to a boxing organization owned by AIBA, which oversees Olympic boxing. Whistleblowers reported that the money came from an Azerbaijan government minister, and were strictly a cash-for-medals exchange.

"Ivan boasted to a few of us that there was no need to worry about World Series Boxing having the coin to pay its bills. As long as the Azeris got their medals, WSB would have the cash."

Another said that Mr Khodabakhsh came in and said: "We are safe now - Azerbaijan came in - we have to give them medals for that."

"He was talking about gold medals in London in return for millions of dollars of secret payments," the insider added. "Medals are being sold so blatantly it's amazing."

Azerbaijan denied the allegations, and an AIBA committee found them groundless. (The $9M was deemed to be a "purely commercial investment.") But here we are! Azerbaijan's Abdulhamidov was awarded a win he didn't come close to earning.

This one has a happy ending, sort of. Late last night, AIBA officials upheld Japan's appeal, and awarded the bout to Shimizu. Their statement:

After reviewing the video of Bout #105 involving Bantamweights Satoshi Shimizu (Japan) and Magomed Abdulhamidov (Azerbaijan), the Competition Jury made the following decision:

      - The boxer from Azerbaijan fell down six (6) times during the 3rd round. According to our rules, the Referee should have counted at least three (3) times. In this case, following the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules, the decision should have been RSC (Referee Stop Contest);

      - Therefore the protest lodged by the Japanese corner is accepted and the result of this bout overturned.

AIBA officials will consider on Thursday morning whether to sanction the referee of this bout.

Shimizu moves on. Abdulhamidov goes home. The Turkmenistani ref may be punished for not stopping the fight. The judges? Nothing happens to them. Olympic boxing remains a joke.
