After a week of cleaning the mud and sand out of every nook and cranny in the sport, the 2012 AMA Supercross Series is bound for Indianapolis and it's amazing Lucas Oil Stadium for Round 11.

A relatively new facility which replaced the storied RCA Dome a few years back, Lucas Oil Stadium is an impressive place. Home to the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and site of the 2012 Super Bowl, AMA Supercross is happy to be headed back to not only a great stadium, but an intense and large crowd. With expected attendance figures in the mid-50K range, and with a resurgent James Stewart, this weekend's racing is bound to be one for the memory banks.

Event Info:
Event: Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship
Date: Saturday 17 March 2012
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis

The track at Indy is generally believed to have some of the best dirt on the circuit to build the track with - second only to St. Louis in terms of rider affection for it. This year we once again get to see the over-under bridge, which we've seen only one other time this season, in St. Louis. Otherwise, the most notable feature of this particular track are the mutliple 180 degree bowl turns, which tend to lead to more passing opportunites than a 90 degree turn, which often result in a 'one fast line' scenario, and thus fewer passes.

In Daytona last weekend, passing opportunities were the least of the racers' worries, as torrential rain during the practice sessions resulted in a track that was just as home to JetSkis as it was to supercross bikes. Several portions of the Ricky Carmichael designed affair were actually filled in with dirt prior to the "really big rains" that hit a bit later in the afternoon. These areas were dug down into the surface of the Daytona Speedway infield and based on past experience with the same situation in 2008, were filled back in with the soil that was removed. This was a good thing, as even areas of the track that were NOT excavated were experiencing deep puddling, such as shown in the photo above in the middle of a rhythm section on the far end of the track.

Not necessarily known as a great mud rider, but certainly known as a great Daytona rider, James Stewart proved to be the man to beat all day. He smoked his heat race, then went on to a main event win as well, following a battle with his teammate Davi Millsaps in the opening laps. Stewart was in need of a win since he came into Daytona at nearly a fifty point deficit to defending champ Ryan Villopoto. After RV's unfortunate night, and the Stewart win, James left a mere twenty nine points back - just four more than the points paid by a single main event win. It's not over yet, folks, as one DNF weekend for Villopoto and a win by Stewart will make this anyone's championship. Let's not forget Jacksonville last year when RV failed to qualify for the main after a few untimely crashes.
