What's up for 2012?


Nonito Donaire won over Wilfredo Vazquez JR for the WBO superbantam title last Feb 4 by split decision and JOHNRIEL CASIMERO KOed LUIS ALBERTO ZARATE in the 8th round for the interim IBF lightfly title where a riot erupted in Argentina.

This March, we have three Pinoy boxers who will fight for the world championship belts as Filipino SONNY BOY JARO will challenge long-reigning Thai champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam for the WBC flyweight title in Thailand on march 2. The next day, Filipino challenger Michael Landero will square off against Moises Fuentes of Mexico for the WBO strawweight title in Tijuana,Mexico. And on March 24, Filipino one-time world champion Rodel Mayol will fight Hernan Marquez of Mexico for the WBA fly title in Mexico City.

On April,Brian Viloria will come back again in the Philippines to fight his nemesis Omar Nino Romero of Mexico in a trilogy.Viloria lost to Romero once and drawn on their 2nd fight.

Of course, the much awaited fight of the year will be on June 9 when Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBO welter title against Timothy Bradley of USA. Bradley is an undefeated fighter but known for his dirty antics.

But wait,the most interesting fight will be on July 14 if plans will not scrapped,when,Pacman arch-rival Juan Manuel Marquez will fight against a Filipino!..not Pacman but Mercito Gesta!

Mercito Gesta is an undefeated Filipino lightwelter boxer with a record of 24-0.He is unknown for many but is famous among boxing aficionados. Gesta and Marquez will dispute for the vacant WBO light welter title in a card that will be promoted by Top rank to be known as "Philippines vs Mexico".

However,there are also plans for staging a world title fight this summer in Manila in the newly built SM Arena,between Donaire and a Mexican foe.

Indeed,it will be a good year for the Filipino boxers.

Michael Landero is originally scheduled to fight Moises Fuentes for the WBO straw title however Fuentes injured during training thus the fight was cancelled.
