‘Operation Smile’ to operate 500 kids in 3 cities
By Nef Luczon Published : 2007-11-06

OPERATION SMILE included Davao City as among three cities in the country for a simultaneous world-wide surgical mission for children suffering from facial deformities performed on November 7.

‘Operation Smile’ officials projected to operate about 500 children inflicted with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities in the cities of Davao, Makati, and Naga.

The group already conducted a pre-screening on patients yesterday at the Davao Medical Center gymnasium. The annual project is also part of its 25th founding anniversary of its unit in the Philippines.

OS President for Mindanao Joselito Cembrano said his group has always relied on the city as its center in Mindanao for its activities.

OS-Philippines President Lawrence Loh said they are tapping the services of medical students for the event and that they will be the ones to conduct studies on parents of those children suffering from facial deformities.

“We are bringing in medical students to do the DNA studies to better take care of children (with deformities) in the future,” Loh said.

This year’s event was dubbed as the “World Journey of Smiles (WJOS)” as the medical missions will be held simultaneously across 40 sites in 25 countries from November 7 to 16.

WJOS will mobilize more than 1,500 volunteers in 40 hospitals, care centers, and clinics across five continents (Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America).

“The World Journey of Smiles is our anniversary gift to children around the world and will be the largest surgical mission ever conducted,” said Dr. Bill Magee, a plastic surgeon who founded ‘Operation Smile’ in 1982 after conducting a medical mission in Naga City with wife Kathy, a former nurse and clinical social worker.

“When we began this effort 25 years ago, we hoped to fulfill our promise to the hundreds of children in the Philippines whom we were not able to treat on that first mission. With the World Journey of Smiles, our goal is to bring smiles and hope to children around the world,” Maggie added.
