Manny Pacquiao's Training Schedules and Media Day Threatened By Typhoon "Megi"

Al Bello/Getty Images Manny Pacquiao's media day scheduled for Monday in Baguio City in the Philippines is being threatened by typhoon "Megi," which has already entered the Philippine area of responsibility ahead of the arrival in the country of Top Rank Promotions owner Bob Arum and his entourage.

The powerful typhoon will not only alter the media day schedule, but it may likewise move Pacquiao and his team from Baguio City to Manila ahead of the typhoon's landfall over the weekend.

Baguio City, where the Pacquiao training camp is located, is expected to be hit directly by "Megi" along with the towns and cities in northern Luzon.

It appears the schedules of Bob Arum, Freddie Roach and the rest of the team, including the local and international media, will have to be revised in the wake on the approaching typhoon which could again submerge the low-lying towns and cities in central Luzon and isolate Baguio City from Metro Manila for several days.

Bob Arum was originally scheduled to fly to Baguio from Manila on a private plane, but he may have to abort the plan and travel by land instead.

It is possible Freddie Roach will try to beat 'Megi" by moving his team from the summer capital down to Metro Manila for the final phase of training in the Philippines before flying out to Los Angeles, California.

The team was originally scheduled to leave for the US on October 20, but the schedule was later moved to Saturday, October 23.

The typhoon alert comes at a time when the training sessions have reached its peak after some snags caused by Pacquiao's weekend trips to Manila in line with his call of duty as an elected official of the country.

For almost three weeks, trainer Freddie Roach had to make some adjustments on his schedules due to unforeseen circumstances including Pacquiao's leg injury and his brief battle with the flu.

Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza has been concerned about Pacquiao's leg injury which was reportedly caused by his frequent games.

“Manny did great,” Ariza told the Inquirer after the pound-for-pound champ’s workout yesterday at Teacher’s Camp in Baguio City. “It was the best work I’ve seen all week.”

Pacquiao has been sparring with New Jersey's Glen Tapia and Mexico's Mechael Medina. It was earlier reported Amir Khan, who is in the country for the initial phase of his training under Freddie Roach, may likewise spar with the pound-for-pound king.

Amir Khan is scheduled to clash with Marcos Maidana of Argentina on December 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bob Arum, who is traveling with his daughter Dena DuBoef, is expected to proceed immediately to Baguio City after arrival at the Manila airport.

"I am so excited to get there and see Manny, the team and the Filipino boxing fans," said Arum prior to departing for Manila.

Meanwhile, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., who was earlier reported to be traveling to Manila to spar with the Filipino boxer, has canceled his trip saying he foresees a possible clash with Manny Pacquiao next year.

The young Chavez, who is the son of the legendary Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr., was widely criticized for his ambitious plan to face Pacquiao so soon, saying he is not yet ripe and ready to challenge the pound for pound king.

AnywhereProfessionalSolutionsAboutLog inRelated News:Asia .Typhoon Megi Strengthens, May Reach Northern Philippines Within Three Days
By Jacob Greber - Oct 16, 2010 4:48 AM GMT+0300 Tweet (1)LinkedIn Share
Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email .Typhoon Megi is strengthening as it heads across the Pacific Ocean toward the Philippines where it’s expected to make landfall within three days, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration.

Megi, known in the Philippines as Juan, was about 1,040 kilometers (646 miles) east of Northern Luzon at 7 a.m. local time, the administration said on its website. The storm is forecast to move northwest at 20 kilometers an hour, reaching Cagayan late on Oct. 18. Its maximum winds are blowing at 170 kph.

Winds may strengthen to 250 kph as the storm nears Luzon, the country’s most populous island, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said yesterday. That would make it a Category 5 storm, the strongest, on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind scale and capable of “catastrophic damage,” according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The administration today advised fishing boats and small vessels not to venture out to sea and alerted larger ships against the risk of waves of as high as 4.5 meters. Megi is forecast to leave the Philippines on Oct. 19, heading northwest toward Hainan, China.

Megi is the name of a catfish in South Korea and is related to the feeling of getting wet, according to the Hong Kong Observatory, which lists names assigned to storms in the northwest Pacific. Megi is the 15th storm of the season.

Typhoon Conson left 102 people dead in the Philippines in July and destroyed or damaged more than 70,000 homes, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said in August.

Typhoon Megi to strike over weekend

A new tropical storm approaching the country is expected to strengthen into a typhoon before hitting Luzon and the Visayas over the weekend or by early next week, reported the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“This weather disturbance is still [currently] too far to affect any part of the country,” said Pagasa.

However, forecaster Buddy Javier pointed out that, “Our calculations show it is likely to hit Visayas and the entire Luzon.”

Tropical Storm Megi will be codenamed ‘Juan’ when it enters the Philippine area of responsibility. As of 2:00am today, Pagasa reported it to be 670 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar, moving northwest at 15 kph with maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.

"We can expect rains in [the] Visayas and Luzon because of Megi. It is also affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao," added Javier.

The weather disturbance is eventually expected to make landfall between Isabela and Cagayan provinces.

"Landfall is based on the eye of the storm, but its circulation could be felt [as early as] Sunday afternoon in the two provinces [where it will make landfall]," said Pagasa deputy director for research and development Nathaniel Servando.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo also warned that Megi may bring the same kinds of heavy rains Ondoy (international name Ketsana) did last year.

The record rainfall brought about by Ondoy resulted in hundreds dead and millions of pesos in damage to property in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.
