As regards the conduct of board exams, I have a bias for the traditional way which I consider to be still the best in terms of gauging a person’s technical knowledge and capabilities. There are pragmatic reasons, however, why board exams are now “computerized”.

In our time, we used to bring a certain number of books and reference materials that were allowed in the exam hall for particular subjects. This was especially true for Machine Design (two different textbooks allowed, plus Kent’s Mechanical Engineers Handbook). In addition, the PSME Code was always there as a ready reference. For Power and Industrial Plant subjects, the “Steam Tables” and other Property Tables and Charts were very important tools.

Board exam takers of today are missing the thrill of calculating, for instance, property values from Steam Tables by interpolation (or even double interpolation, particularly in the case of superheated state of steam). This is not to mention locating state points of steam from the Mollier Chart as the case may be. (In today’s board exam, these property values are usually given without much effort from the examinee.)

In Machine Design, we used to draw or make a sketch of everything being asked. I believe that this is one of the criteria for determining topnotchers – a very neat sketch of the machine member plus the correct analysis of the problem (e.g. you have to draw the flange coupling with correct design calculations). It seems today’s board exam has lost all the traditional excitement.

So, I guess Engr. Dan was also having the same thrill of experience? :D

Machine Design is my favorite subject. It is where I can put to good use my skills in Geometry, Trigonometry, Drawing & up to Kinematics. I remember working as an apprentice machinist (ME undergrad) in the US Naval Ship Repair Facility. A machinist oldtimer requested our foreman my assistance in determining the "depth of cut" in producing a helical gear in a Milling machine.

Gamit ang ME Handbook at given parameters (no. of teeth, helix angle etc.) makukuha and DOC at ibibigay kay Tatang, at papasadahan na ng gear cutter ang blank shaft.

:biglaugh:
