The World Ocean is the habitat of 230,000 known species, but because much of it is unexplored, the number of species that exist in the ocean is much larger, possibly over two million.

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west and theAmericas in the east.

The Pacific Ocean covers about 46% of Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of Earth's land area combined.

At 14,000,000 square kilometres (5,400,000 square miles), Antartica is the fifth-largest continent. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages 1.9 km (1.2 mi; 6,200 ft) in thickness, which extends to all but the northernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Greenland is the world's largest island. Australia and Antarctica (both larger) are generally considered to be continental landmasses rather than islands.

Three-quarters of Greenland is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. With a population of about 56,480 (2013), it is the least densely populated territory in the world.

Rain is measured in units of length per unit time, typically in millimeters per hour. One millimeter of rainfall is the equivalent of one liter of water per square meter.
