DAVAO -– A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook parts of southern Philippines Thursday, but state seismologists said no damage or injuries have been reported.

Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said the magnitude 6.1 tremor struck at 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

Solidum said it was centered at sea about 53 miles (85 kilometers) southeast of General Santos City at a depth of 115 miles (184 kilometers), too deep to generate a tsunami or cause damage.

He added the quake was felt at Intensity V at General Santos City, and Intensity III in the cities of Kidapawan and Cotabato.

It was felt strongest in General Santos City, about 640 miles (1,030 kilometers) southeast of Manila, he added.

The Philippine archipelago lies in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire where quakes are common. (BOT/AP/Sunnex)

Mga pre, I was in Maharlika 1 beach resort in GenSan when an earthquake happened around lunch time... Akala ko lasing lang ako pero lindol na pala... Tingin kaagad ako sa dagat kasi baka may tsunami pero buti na lang at wala...
