7/9/2018 – In a very tense match, Wesley So defeated Paco Vallejo in the blitz tiebreak rounds despite the fact that the Spaniard obtained better positions in most of the games. So played offbeat openings that did not quite work out in his favour, but showed great tenacity in the ensuing positions. This was Wesley's second consecutive tournament victory in Leon.

Sinquefield Cup started on August 17 with Wesley losing his first match Mamedyarov and draws with Nakamura in the second round. He is in the rear of the standing with Karjakin. He will be facing Maxime in the third round. Hopefully, he will be able to get the full-point. However, it is easier said than done as we all know that Wesley always have a hard time with Maxime. Plus, Wesley will be playing black. Let us hope for the best though.

After a good start in the GCT 2018, Wesley's performance nose dived at Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz. It carries on until the Sinquefield Cup. He dropped to 4th place in the GCT 2018 tour with Nakamura leading 33 points. 2nd is Maxime with 25. Third is Karjakin with 24. Wesley 4th with 23. The top 4 GCT finalists (after the Sinquefield Cup) will play in the Grand Chess Tour Final in London.

After the 5th round, 5 players are tied for first with 3 points each and they are Caruana, Aronian, Grischuk, Mamedyarov and Carlsen with Anand and Lagrave tied for 6th with 2.5 points. Wesely sits at 8 with 2 points. Bringing up the rear are Karjakin and Nakamura. It is so surprising that Nakamura is performing really bad at Sinquefield after topping the Rapid and Blitz. He is putting himself in danger of missing the top 4 for the 2018 GCT finals.

Anyways, Wesley will play white against Anand in round 6 and black against Aronian in the 7th round.

4 more rounds and Wesley should make his move to grab at least a win to be in contention and to solidify his hold at 4th place in the 2018 GCT finals. Else, and together with Nakamura...both will miss the 2018 GCT finals

Based on granting of points (1=13, 2=10, 3=8, 4=7, 5=6, 6=5, 7=4, 8=3 and 9=2......I think Wesley (and Nakamura, too) stills qualify sa 2018 GCT Tour Finals with approximate total points of 27 (including Sinquefield of 4 points for placing 7 + his total point as of the Rapid and Blitz of 23).

Nakamura, even though he placed second to last (9th), also gets in with total points of 35. He only earned 2 points in Sinquefield but his total points as of Rapid and Blitz is 33 giving him total of 35 points.

Maxime, earned 6 points in Sinquefield and added to his total points as of Rapid and Blitz of 25 points will give him a total of 31 points.

Aronian also gets in with a total points of 29.

Karjakin, I feel sorry for him because he failed to enter the top four of the 2018 GCT Finals earning only 1 for placing 10th and last in Sinquefield. He wasted the 24 points he accumulated as of Rapid and Blitz. His total points is only 25.

Caruana missed it even if he earned 13 points for topping the Sinquefield as his accumulated total points is only 24. He has a total of 11 points only as of Rapid and Blitz.

Back to Wesley....he is lucky that those in the lower rank place figured prominently in the Sinquefield Cup like Caruana (and Carlsen) with Karjakin paring poorly thus missing the finals.

Final top four for 2018 GCT Tour are the following:
1. Nakamura - 35 points
2. Maxime - 31 points
3. Aronian - 29 points
4. Wesley - 27 points

Sir Joey, could you please confirm if my computation is correct?
