Chess: Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem takes Aeroflot Open title

Vietnamese teenager Le Quang Liem this week became the first Asian chess player to win Moscow Aeroflot, the toughest open tournament in the world.

On the way to the title, the 18-year-old beat France’s Bacrot and China’s leading player Bu Xiangzhi.

The victory and a third place in the earlier Moscow Open brought him US$30,000 in awards and will put him into the FIDE top 50 in March.

Liem, who was the under-14 world champion four years ago, got additional 42 points from the Aeroflot and Moscow open tournaments, putting his Elo rating to 2,689 and him into the top 50 list.

After the victory, the teenager told Thanh Nien newspaper that he would stay in Russia one month to consult Russian coach Khalifman, a former FIDE champion. He added he was targeting the world top 20 list in the future.

See the RESULTS of GOOD GOVT INVESTMENT on GM Le Quang Liem ... He is TRAINING in RUSSIA under the TUTELAGE of 1999 FIDE World Champion GM Alexander Khalifman of Russia!

Why could we not do the same to GM Wesley So ?!

Where will you place GM Wesley So today only if ... (???)

If GM Wesley So had a successful run as of today practically on his own without a "regular Coaching Staff" ... NOW with a LIVE ELO RATING of 2665.3 (after Aeroflot 2010) ... come to think ... what if just like GMs Le Quang Liem (Aeroflot Champion) & Nguyen, Ngoc Truong Son (who placed 3rd @ Aeroflot & the only player who had defeated Wesley So) who are both young men from Vietnam, who according to reports been under the Russian regimen of training the last two years, courtesy of their mother country govt financial support ?!

Where will you place GM Wesley So today if only he got proper training, coaching & financial support ??? Do you think he had already surpassed ELO 2700 ???

Wesley So has already made great strides in his bid for chess supremacy given his very limited resources. Slowly but surely he is inching his way to being a Hyper GM with or without help. That is the greatness of Wesley SO.....
:celebrate: :combo: :toast: :drinking: :combo:

Help from outside will only hasten his bid for Hyper GM but surely he will become one in the future.....
God Bless You Wesley SO !!!!

His other countrymen ... Vietnam National Chess Team has also been training with a Russian coach Svend Chikov, who has worked with the team for 14 years.

Last year (2009), an Ukrainian chess expert has been invited to train the national chess team as replacement for the Russian coach. The Ukrainian coach, Vassily Mikhailov, was selected after he helped young chess player, Tran Minh Thang (Hanoi), to become the champion at the World Young Chess Tournament 2008.

Vassily Mikhailov will have a one-year contract (till December 2009) with a monthly pay of $1,500.

The Ukrainian coach and three Vietnamese assistants, Le Hong Duc, Lam Minh Chau and Tong Thai Hung, are training the national chess team, including seven male and three female players, at the National Sports Training Centre No.2.

MAYDAY...MAYDAY !!!

Dump Wesley So's entire Filipino coaching team. They are all second rate. The Philippine chess federation should hire former world champs in the likes of Kasparov or Karpov. It's a shame if So will be another Paragua. A wasted talent due to poor support and nurturing.

So far, the local feds is doing good in exposing So in tough European-based tourneys, NOT Asia.

Now for the last piece of the puzzle, replace his coaching staff by former world champs or top-tier Russian world contenders. So's recent games are diminishing and the once-vaunted killer instinct is fizzling out. This is alarming! It's a big waste if he will fall in the trap of a Torre performance (no pun intended),...settling for draws as a 'victory' against fellow GM's.

He better regroup and regain that killer instinct that he had during the World Chess Cup backed by potent Russian coaching staff. In doing that. the 2700 Hyper-GM level is very well in sight.

Calling on Philippine Chess Federation...WAKE-UP!!!

Let us learn from our Neighbors !!! :D

In addition to Vietnam let us also learn from China experience ...

China is now a major chess power and proved so graphically at the 2006 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin when the men's team came second and the women's team third for easily the best result overall. The Chinese progress has been underpinned by large government support and testing competition in numerous tough events.

As of Jan 2010 Fide Listing ... China ranked 4th in the Top Countries listing. >>> http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml

It has two(2) Hyper GMs:
1 Wang, Yue g CHN 2749 1987
2 Wang, Hao g CHN 2715 1989

and seven(7) Super GMs
1 Bu, Xiangzhi g CHN 2673 1985
2 Ni, Hua g CHN 2657 1983
3 Zhou, Jianchao g CHN 2632 1988
4 Zhang, Pengxiang g CHN 2605 1980
5 Li, Chao b g CHN 2604 1989
6 Ye, Jiangchuan g CHN 2602 1960
7 Zhou, Weiqi g CHN 2600 1986

Current YOUNGEST IN FIDE's Top Players Lists is:
Hou, Yifan g CHN 2590 (Born Feb 27, 1994)
is just 10 elo short of becoming a Super GM.

Yu Yangyi is another China's top junior chess player, who in October 2009 at the age of 15, became China's 29th Grandmaster.
Yu, Yangyi g CHN 2574 (Born June 8, 1994)

What's China secret ??? That we have to learn !!!

China's Chess Organization ... The Chinese Chess Association (CCA) is the governing body of chess in China. ref: >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Chess_Association

The CCA selects and finances the Chinese national team for the biannual Chess Olympiad, World Team Chess Championships (every 4 years), Asian Team Chess Championships, Asian Chess Games, Asian Indoor Games, national chess summits, and it also funds players' training and for them to participate in individual tournaments.

Chinese National Team has a complete Team Managers & Training Staff (Coaches).

As for the funding ...

Officials of the Chinese Chess Association are appointed by the National Sports Committee which also provides funding.

The Chinese Chess Association, in 1993, received an endowment fund from Singapore businessman Mr. S T Lee who donated about US $1.5 million. 10% of this donation was for the establishment of the Chess library in China QiYuan. The remaining 90% were deposited in a fixed account from which the Chinese Chess Association drew interest mainly for its administrative operations and to send players for overseas competitions.

In 1997, the Chinese Chess Association founded a computer firm to fund its other activities on an annual basis.

So joins PSC list of elite athletes
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated February 11, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Grandmaster Wesley So will join the roster of “elite athletes” set to get full financial backing from the Philippine Sports Commission in its buildup for this year’s Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

PSC chair Harry Angping said So’s recent exploits abroad, including a Last 16 finish in the World Chess Cup last November, were enough for the 16-year-old Bacoor City, Cavite native to be included in the elite group headed by netters Cecil Mamiit and Treat Conrad Huey and bowler Biboy Rivera.

So will thus get a monthly stipend of P20,000 plus a choice international stints on a quarterly basis.

“In case of chess, Wesley So is a shoo-in because as we can see, he’s obviously our best bet,” Angping said.

The PSC chief, however, is still in the process of finalizing the list since most of the NSAs (national sports associations) have yet to submit their respective programs and recommendations.

“He (So) will get the same package, which means the same salary plus international exposures,” Angping said.

He added that the PSC would be willing to put up a minimum of P1 million and a maximum of P2 million to finance So’s training for the Guangzhou games.

In case of Wesley So, I’m open to set aside P1M or P2M just for him alone. Wesley would surely enjoy the privilege,” he said.

The same package, however, could not be said for the other Filipino chess players.

“The others we’ll just subsidize partially, not full. We’ll let the association (National Chess Federation of the Philippines) augment the rest,” said Angping.

...

So is coming off an impressive performance in the World Cup where he beat former world champions Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Gata Kamsky of the US.

He finished fourth in Group B of the tough Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands last month and is currently participating in the Aeroflot Open in Moscow, Russia along with fellow GM Darwin Laylo.

So is now ranked 76th in the world with a FIDE rating of 2656, the highest by any Filipino.

This is a WELCOME NEWS to Wesley So! :D

Though a Php 20K monthly stipend Plus a Max of Php2M (for his Training & International exposures) these would not be enough to provide for a "Wesley So Training Team" (at least a Coach & Trainer Plus Second) considering that the amount is ONLY INTENDED for HIS preparation to the Asian Games come November.

A "Long Term Training & Joining Top GMs Tourneys" or in short PROJECT 2700 should be considered!!!

Let us HOPE & PRAY that other PATRONS/SPONSORS (Govt/Private/Business Enterprises) will provide the means. We need somebody to CHAMPION for this cause !!! :)

I thought I was dreaming when I saw the supports starts coming in... Quite small to recruit a top-gun second from overseas but good enough for hiring a local...Torre maybe?

Me too Bro "Iring-banbanon" ! :D

Torre would be of great help (remember he is one of Bobby Fischer's seconds) & could act as one of Wesley's Coaches & an Asst Coach to would be chosen Super/Hyper GM coach preferably a former World champ too who is gifted with a coaching ability!

Hopefully, financial support would pour in to support Project 2700 ! :D

Great Thread joeyj. At least we have an official So Thread. :D

Wes is really talented. To go this far with lack of proper training gives you an idea that he is special. His aggressive style is also unique and rich in potential. A high profile coach will give him more confidence in his game, control in his aggression and composure during endgame.

As I/We observed in his recent matches, So's endgame needs more improvement. (sayang yung advantage na binibigay ng pagiging agresibo niya) A coach who will challenge him during training may fill the gap. During practice, Chess softwares will help him solve some problems but an equally skilled and more experienced chess player will put him in situations akin to what he experienced during the closing minutes of the Giri match (ehem  ). Men can sometimes be unpredictably dangerous.

The Chinese and the Viets are doing great in their chess program. Maybe the relationship between Russia and the other communist countries makes it easier for Chinese and Vietnamese.

GM Wesley So interview @ The World Cup 2009
An excerpt from: >>> http://ugra-chess.ru/eng/interv_12.htm

Image

The young Wesley So from the Philippines is the only sensation producer of the World Cup 2009. He won Vassily Ivanchuk in Round 2 and defeated the last Cup winner of the Cup Gata Kamsky with black.

• Tell us about yourself? Your achievement in chess?

I am 16 and the greatest achievement for me so far is the second place in one tournament with average rating about 2700. At the moment my rating is 2640. I dream that sooner or later I will come to the magical point 2700. I don't know how much time I will need for that.

• Are you planning to participate in the World Junior Chess Championship? Or you are not interested to play against the opponents of your age?

It could be stupid of me to think that due to my performance here I became a big shot. In fact to win the World Junior U-20 Championship is my nearest aim in chess. It will be a tough competition. Some of the potential participants of the Championship are here: Negi Parimarjan, Hou Yifan, Sanan Syugirov. I am trying to follow their games here, their openings most of all.

• How can you define your chess style?

So far I play aggressively. I would like to play a solid game with a solid opening. This is what I want. I think my style is close to Vishy Anand. Of course we have different level.

• Do you have a personal coach?

Unfortunately I don't. But I think that the moment is coming: I will need it soon. I would train chess with Sanan Syugirov with pleasure for instance. He is my age. The only problem he does not speak English. Anyway I feel like having an assistant now. Another problem is that chess in not that famous in the Philippines . We don't get any financial support from the Government. They don't give money for tournaments, coaches, nothing. Our National Federation pays our tickets. That's it. You realize at one moment that to reach some professional level you need private sponsors. I would be happy with some 20-30 thousand US dollars a year.

::: :) :::

So that's it !!!

Wesley had layed out his plan ...
1. His dream of reaching 2700!
2. Winning the World Junior U-20 Championship

What he needs ...
1. Personal coach (coach close to his style like Vishy Anand ... maybe when Vishy retires later ... for now he need one ASAP)
2. Sponsors [Top Businessmen(similar to China's Mr. S T Lee), Companies, Govt & foreign grants/sponsorship maybe]
3. at least 20-30K US$ a year (I think for his personal existence only as a GM)
