In Pinoy chess history, only 2 players have officially cracked the 2600 rating - "Super GM" status - Wesley So and Mark Paragua. Here is the list of the players who are almost nearing that mark and I think have a shot of eclipsing the coveted rating (within the immediate future ~2 years), ranked according to who I think has the best shot of making it.

In a way we can make this thread as a general discussion forum for these guys.

1. Mark Paragua - seems to have found the fountain of youth. After years of relative inactivity and subpar results, MakMak seems like he wants to go for another run. He definitely has the capability, just need to string a few successful tournaments within a few months and he'll get there. Nice win in PSC cup but a couple of uncharacteristic losses during the Zonals set him back. But I think he can get there by the end of the year, definitely before next year's Olympiad if he stays consistent.

2. Julio Sadorra - amazing talent, fighting chess, does not settle for draws. Inactive lately due to schooling, but he is graduating in a few months, then plans to go back to chess. He's only 27, still has a good 5-6 years of high level chess. But he has to go beyond USCF chess if he wants to get there. Maybe play some tournaments in Asia to get his rating up. He's good enough to beat the sub 2600 players. I think with consistent playing he can be at Nguyen's (VIE #2) level.

3. Oliver Barbosa - unofficially broke the 2600 barrier before, very good performance during last year's Olympiad shows that he belongs in the top group. However, performance is too inconsistent at times. Shows flashes of brilliance at times, yet at others rather lackluster. 2013 might be the year he finally steps the gas pedal and doesn't look back. He became a GM in 2011 has had a wonderful couple of years. Hopefully he has more in the bag.

4. Joey Antonio - the old dog is still fighting. Experience is his biggest weapon, but at his age his rating might just plateau through his retirement. Seems content in playing small, local tournaments, but will always be a favorite to score well no matter where he plays.

5. Haridas Pascua - the past half a year or so has been that of great improvement for the kid. He's at Wesley's age, and even though he hasn't reached the peak that Wes has, he has a lot of time ahead of him. He's already at 24xx right now, and another breakout tournament or two will place him in the mid 25xx and from there he can work his way up.

6. John Paul Gomez - haven't really heard much from him since his good 2011. His rating is just a hair over 2500 now, but who knows what can happen.

If our players improve from this point on, I expect the PHI to field the following team for Tromso next year

Board 1: Wesley So (~2740)
Board 2: Mark Paragua (~2620)
Board 3: Ino Sadorra (~2605)
Board 4: Oliver Barbosa (~2590)

Reserve: Joey Antonio (~2560)

might be wishful thinking though :(

# 3. Oliver Barbosa - unofficially broke the 2600 barrier before ... ???

BTW, Barbosa has not yet breached the 2600+ barrier ... it was MEDIA ERRONEOUS REPORTING !!! :(

Barbosa's highest Live rating was 2584.6 and this was converted to 2585 FIDE rating on March 2012 FIDE Ratings list (his PEAK RATING so far) !!! :)

I had documented it hereat (pls read): http://forum.philboxing.com/viewtopic.php?f=94&p=4973013

very interesting, thanks for pointing it out

still, I do think that he can reach it; in top level competition (2012 olympiad) his performance rating was 2668 (!!!)

Granted, a couple of his wins (vs Gawain Jones - poorly played endgame and Georgiev - Barbs was lost in the endgame, and georgiev made the only bad move given the position) were complete giveaways, you can't discount such a great performance

Nice to see the big fat eggs next to the Philippine players, seems like the PHI hasn't paid its FIDE dues after all.

Round 6: Sadorra(2565)-Berczes(2526): 1-0 Sadorra wins
Round 7: Negi(2639)-Sadorra(2565): 0-1 Sadorra wins

Ino has now tied Negi with 5,5 points for a share at first (with a better TB I believe) with 2 rounds to go

Ino can get to 2600 if he finishes well here and does well in the Final Four (hopefully not at the expense of Webster U).

Both Negi and Sadorra settled for the quick draws in the last round. So I guess Negi wins this by virtue of superior tiebreaks.

Nice win by Ino though in Round 7 against Negi. Capitalised on a single mistake by Negi and shoved a pair of protected passed pawns down the board for an easy. Even neglected a mate in 3 (or missed I guess?).
