I made this thread in connection to the ongoing arguments they are having regarding boxing and basketball in the other forum.
They say there are no height classes in boxing that's why is it the sport for Pinoys. So is chess. No height, not even weight classes.
And just like basketball, chess was once a passion of Pinoys.
But with the success of the Gilas team in the recent concluded FIBA, basketball is again the talk of the town.
Eugene Torre was Asia's first Grandmaster. And with that, it sparked a passion for chess in the 70s. But it waned at end of the 80s.
Now we only have Wesley So, the only pride of Pinoys in the chess world. I know that funding and sponsoring is the problem that's always been plaguing Pinoy sports.
But let's put that aside for the moment.
The question is: (Just like comparing Pinoy heights to American and European heights in basketball, let's compare the Pinoy brain to its international competitors' in Chess.)
Can the Pinoy brains compete with the powerful minds of the Russians, Hungarians, English and even Indians and someday have a chance to become world champions?
I wish there will come a time when a bunch of great minds will emerge just like the emergence of Pacman and company in boxing.

Thanks Dwight. I hope so too. Although it's not a physical sports, chess will show the level our intelligence compared to the rest of the world. 8)

The only real question there is when... But as long as you have the brains and the passion then the future is looking bright. So my answer to this question is yes there will come a time someone from the Philippines will become world chess champion... :D

there are a lot of sports that are within reach. the question is if the government is dedicated to it. chess, kayak, boat racing, bowling, boxing, billiards, soccer, archery, taekwondo, karate, marathon, cycling, etc... sports that would nullify height and reach advantage. all it needs are proper nutrition, conditioning, coaching, and dedication.

Wesley So all the way. I feel sorry for this young guy.
No matter how hard some people try to promote him, it seems
he is still unknown to majority of the Filipinos.

Funding? You don't need much funding in chess.

I really don't know Wesley So. But he seems to be a shy guy. If only he has the charisma like Pacman, then maybe a lot of people will support him.
Parang showbiz din yan. The more you're noisy, the more people will recognize you.

We have already world chess champion before. Your question should be "are we going to have a world chess champion again?" 8)

Eugene Torre did not become a world champion. He only qualified for the Candidates Matches for the World Championship in 1984. That was when he was eliminated by Zoltan Ribli.
