When your 8-year-old is the world's youngest chess FIDE master

Eight-year-old Alekhine Nouri has lived up to his namesake, Russian chess world champion Alexander Alekhine, becoming the world's youngest FIDE master

MANILA, Philippines “Makulit pa rin siya,” (“He’s still playful”) says Filipino FIDE (Fédération internationale des échecs) master (FM) and father Hamed Nouri, describing his eight year-old-son Alekhine Nouri, the world’s youngest FM.

Alekhine, named after the Russian chess world champion Alexander Alekhine, acquired the FM title when he was just 7 years old. He represented the Philippines in the 14th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships 2013 in Chiang Mai, Thailand for the 8 and under category. Currently, the chess prodigy is a Grade 1 full scholar at Far Eastern University-Diliman, the first recipient of a new scholarship to the elementary chess program of the Far Eastern University Athletics Department.

Coaching the dream grandmaster

Two days of regular classes, one day training at the National Chess Federation and two days of training with his personal coach and father FM Hamed Nouri is the weekly academic load of a world caliber chess kid like Alekhine.

“Alekhine started the program,” says FEU Chess Program Director and the chess prodigy’s second coach Grand Master (GM) Jason Gonzales recalling having to seek approval for his plan to start the elementary chess program in FEU Diliman. “FEU Athletic Director Mark Molina’s response was positive. At that time, Alekhine was not even a master nor a champion,” Gonzales added.

Alekhine Nouri with his proud parents

In partnership with the National Chess Federation, Far Eastern University prepared a special academic curriculum which was submitted to the Department of Education for approval. The approved curriculum allows Alekhine to have specific days in a week allotted to rigorous ten hours per day chess training. It is a program that is a first for FEU, the National Chess Federation and for the Philippine national team. Alekhine, who started schooling in December 2012, acquired the FM title by June 2013.

“I want to reach super grand master status and be a world champion,” is Alekhine’s consistent answer to the countless times he gets asked about his dream.

Currency of the dream

Lectures in styles and structures, sparring games with older players and reviews of chess games make up the training regimen of the eight-year-old athlete. These are conducted by his two coaches who prepare him for international tournaments. His Father Hamed Nouri even quit his job of 11 years in their hometown, Escalante, Negros Occidental, to personally coach his son.

“It is very difficult,” said both the Nouri parents. “Compared to the life in the province, life in Manila is not only harder but more costly. International games are even more costly.” they added. “But the reason we go on is that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Alekhine,” says Mrs. Rhoda Nouri, mother of Alekhine, who also left their meat shop business and jobs to pursue their youngest son’s chess career in Manila.

Moving forward

Almost a year after Alekhine attained the FM title, the young chess master is now gearing up for his next goal of International Master, a title one step shy of the prestigious Grand Master title.

“Grand Master Wesley So, the Filipino from Bacoor Cavite, became a grand master at 14. So Hamed and I, we would like to break the record at maybe 13?” Gonzales says hopefully. “Hames is a FM.” Unfortunately, there was no support and no break for him. So we are hopeful this time,” Gonzales added.

Gonzales is doing this in addition to his work as Head Coach of the FEU Men’s and Women’s Chess teams. The Men’s recently recaptured the UAAP Championship, which is its seventh in eight years. FEU is the record holder with 14 UAAP Men’s Chess titles.

Alekhine Nouri was one of the athletes recognized during the inauguration of the newly built sports center of FEU Diliman during the school’s 20th Foundation Anniversary themed “Moving Forward”. The center was established to complement the newly built football field in 2013 as FEU highlights the evolution of its sports programs towards excellence.

“We want to be a sports institute which offers genuine grassroot programs for the different sports,” said FEU Diliman Executive Director Lakan-asa Bautista, as FEU kicked off the sports programs at the elementary level.

FEU Diliman is a member of the FEU Group of Schools and offers kindergarten to grade 12 (K-12) for basic education, as well as college education in the fields of Business, Accountancy and Information Technology.

Childhood's fun and games deferred in a quest for the next Bobby Fischer, who once lived in the Philippines. How this kid handles adulthood will be a subject of speculation.
