Negros Island Region has just concluded its Regional Athletic meet held at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. One of the athletes is our 9 year old grand daughter from my niece who is currently in Grade 3. She is competing in the Elementary level who are mostly in Grade 6 with ages 12 and up but she prevailed in 5 events winning 4 golds and 1 silver. The silver medal she got was on 100 m butterfly but this was after her 400 m freestyle event. Her other gold medals were from 100 m backstroke, 4x100 m relay where she was the first jumper. Watch her in the video below. Enjoy watching :D

Apple as we fondly call her started swimming at the age of 4 when we were in a pool and she suddenly jumped in beside me so i got her up and tried to teach her the basics of swimming. Soon after she was crossing the pool all alone. Then her mother enrolled her in a summer class where she got her formal training. a few months after she joined a novice swimming competiton agaisnt 6 years old girls where she garnered 6 medals and became the most bemedaled athlete during that competition.

Hope she'll succeed in the national level in the future...

Thanks sirs! she will be competing in the National Level this coming April. Actually her mom is a single mother and is spending her own money for her training. Kahit noong previous years when she was competing in the novice, other teams are fielding older girls in their age level but still she prevailed. Natatawa lang kami at naawa sa kanila dahil tinuturuan nila ng maling values ang mga bata so their team will win.

Local politicians may sponsor her sir considering its election period...
Try to generate support from them... :D

This is where rigorous training and hard work pays off.

Her routine warm-up in the pool during training period is a four kilometer lap. Then comes a four hour session including putting weights on her legs while swimming and many other hard regimen.

At one time, her grandmother watched her in the training session and she pleaded her daughter to stop the training dahil naawa na daw sya sa pahirap sa kanyang apo. Her daughter just laughed at her dahil hindi pa raw nya nakita ang ibang mas mahirap na training.

Our government should refocus their sports program in the country. My niece even told me that PSA is highly politicized. Yung mga kilala nila at may mga pera ang kinukuha nila kahit kulang sa kakayahan. This puts our sports program in its dismal state. Kinu-corrupt pati ang sports.

Well, they provide lang for the expenses in going to the meet sir but for other expenses we have to shoulder na talaga like her equipment and extra foods and supplements like honey. Honey is a regular part of her diet na eh. Her mother who will be her chaperon will be spending for her own travelling expenses, food and accommodation. But it's fine with us, kaya pa naman ng family. Besides, minsan pag humingi ka sa mga politicos dito, parang nakakainsulto, bibigyan ka ng 20 pesos, hahaha!

The corrupt Philippine sports commission will impede her progress. Just going to be another wasted talent.

:(

Correct sir but we will try our best that we will find a way to handle this. We will be using our own resources just to make sure our efforts wouldn't go in vain.

Well, unfortunately, it doesn't run in our family gene sir. six "putoter" (shorties) siguro meron, hahaha.

One thing she was enrolled in such strenuous sport is that this girl is hyper-active. Whenever she is not into swimming, she keeps on running, jumping, climbing all around. Kung hindi, 11 pm na gising pa sya.

The observation of her coach is that, in normal pacing, four foot strokes to one arm stroke but in her case more than six strokes on her feet. Parang propeller ang kanyang paa eh.

Tim Duncan of SA Spurs is dreaming to be an Olympic swimmer during his teen years..bago pa siya naging isang sikat ng basketball player and probably the greatest power forward of all time....

Well, it happened to my own son who i prodded before to be in track and field. We saw his potential when we had an excursion at a riverside and we brought along our 2 golden retrievers. My son played with them and they had a chase in a long stretch of sand. it was only after about 250 meters when the dogs were able to catch up with him! So I told him to give a shot in track and field but my former wife didn't approved it kaya nagtalo kami dahil dun. Sayang ang kanyang potential na hindi na harness.

of course we recognize her predicament sir. nakita namin sa ilang events na sinalihan nya where much older and taller swimmers were pitted against her but fortunately na compensate pa rin nya by her speed. the last time we swam together hindi ko na kaya ang speed nya, hahaha! I guess you can see in her videos na sa 400 meter freestyle, halos kalahati ng pool ang kanilang distansya ng second placer. Her silver medal came in the next event right after her 400 meter event. During the awarding ceremony, sya na nasa itaas na box ay naging pantay lang sa height ng second placer. We are expecting that two years from now when she will be in grade 5 she will already win medals in National events. In the meantime, we are not expecting much during this forthcoming national meet yet but exposure to more challenging competitions. Kung makakuha ng medal, it will be a plus factor.
