i think the pacquiao mystique overwhelmed clottey. before the fight, clottey talked about how he would beat manny and that he was gonna fight. then they met...

logic would tell us that if a big guy is being challenged by a little guy, the big guy would almost always establish his dominance and intimidate the little guy reminding him he doesn't belong. what happened to clottey when he met pacquiao? he got all chummy... he was awe-struck... better yet, he was intimidated... it was as if their roles were reversed... he wasn't intimidated by manny physically but psychologically because right now manny is the best in the business and the sport's biggest star and he was going up against manny, and he didn't know how to handle it because he's never been in that situation before. it's kinda like the orlando magic vs the lakers in the finals back in 09. go figure.

if you watched the hbo version of "the event" at the end of round 5, lenny de jesus tried to urge clottey to fight but clottey shook his head and said "i can't do it." he conceded to the fact that he didn't belong in the ring with manny after manny attacked and attacked and attacked him. clottey knew about manny's dangerous reputation and when he felt it he didn't know what to do.


theory 2
manny really hurt clottey with his power.

when he said he didn't feel manny's power, that's bullcrap. say if someone hit you and you felt that it didn't hurt, wouldn't you take a chance at hitting him back? and why would you cover up the entire fight if you claimed to feel nothing? it just goes against logic, in my opinion. clottey felt manny's power and it hurt him. clottey deals with speed very well, evidenced by the judah fight. manny's speed was there of course, and it amplified his power. malignaggi has speed but he can't hurt anyone so it shouldn't be that much of a problem to deal with. so it wasn't about speed alone. same goes with diaz's and oscar's excuse. like clottey, they too felt manny's power. even lenny de jesus said some time in the 10th round that clottey felt manny's power and was probably hurt.
